Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers Summer League Preview | July 7, 2024

Lakers Summer League California Classic Game Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers

The second day of Summer League action will include the Golden State Warriors vs. the Los Angeles Lakers. This California Classic game should be an exciting one.

The Warriors won their first California Classic game against the Miami Heat 105-66. It was a huge blowout for the team. Ethan Thompson led the charge of the bench with 27 points and seven rebounds. Another good game was played by Daeqwon Plowden, who followed behind Thompson with 26 points. Lastly, Pat Spencer contributed 16 points, five assists, five rebounds, and one steal.

The Lakers were less fortunate in their first game as they took the loss against the Sacramento Kings. Blake Hinson was the best performer coming off the bench with 17 points. Tommy Kuhse was the next best for the team, and he also came off the bench. The guard had 15 points and eight assists. Lastly, Maxwell Lewis showed up for the starters and contributed 14 points.

Right now, the Warriors have a record of 1-0 in the California Classic, thanks to their first win on July 6th. After the first game, you can expect Plowden to have another big one. He played pretty flawlessly against the Heat. Also, expect a better game from Jackson Rowe. His first showing scoring wise wasn’t the best as he only had seven points. He is averaging 12.4 points per game for the Santa Cruz Warriors, so he should start playing better.

Also, if Ethan Thompson continues to play the way he is, one might see him get a starting position. He already had more minutes than two of the starters, so it is possible. With it being the Summer League, fans can expect changes in the order to test out new starters.

The Lakers now have a 0-1 record due to their first California Classic game. It was not a great game for the purple and gold as they struggled to put points on the board. It wasn’t a blowout by any means, but they missed when it counted most. Bronny James found himself starting this game, and unfortunately, the guard only notched four points. Also, first-rounder Dalton Kanecht struggled to shoot well.

The silver lining was Blake Hinson who came off the bench. He played less than all the starters and yet he had the most points on the team. Hinson could be seen starting this next game, or future ones if he can continue to score.

Possible Breakout Players of the Game

Golden State Warriors

One player to watch for GSW is Reece Beekman. He had ten points, one assist, one rebound, one block, and one steal in his first game. However, I expect these numbers to go up as games pass. Beekman played for the Virginia Cavaliers and had 14,3 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game in the 2023-24 season. I can see Beekman having at least 12 in the next game if not more. He’s a well rounded player who could breakout.

Los Angeles Lakers

Although he had a tough game, there is no way Dalton Knecht is going to shoot that poorly again. He’s well known for his ability to hit threes. Hopefully, he can shake off that first game and have his breakout Summer League performance. Knecht will become a solid NBA player he just needs to get locked in. Adjusting to the league can be difficult, but this guard has the ability to do it.
