Punters are Vital in Football and Ohio State has a Big One

Having a strong punter is essential for a team.

Nick McLarty is the third-string punter for the Buckeyes this year. At six foot seven and 255 pounds, he is the size of an offensive or defensive lineman. It is probably the case that his large size helps him kick the ball a long distance. That said he is a third-string freshman who is in line to be the starting punter in  2028, maybe. Nevertheless, McClarty’s size makes him worthy of mention, and depth in this important position helps Ohio State. This article will discuss the punting outlook at Ohio State and some of the greatest punters in the National Football League.

Punters At Ohio State

There are three punters currently on the roster at Ohio State. Joe McGuire is the starter, and he is a redshirt freshman.  Anthony Venneri is the second-string punter and McLarty, the giant punter, is the third-stringer. He is only a freshman and is from Melbourne, Australia. His background is as an Australian rules football player, the fourth Australian punter to join OSU’s team. He does have a chance to move up the depth chart if he kicks well. That is quite likely as the next section will indicate.

Great Punters In The National Football League

We investigate the list of punters in the National Football League, looking at their average punt and their height. For instance, AJ Cole played for the Oakland Raiders and Las Vegas Raiders. He has the highest average punt in National Football League history at 48.2 yards. He is pretty tall at six foot four inches, but he is not six foot seven like McLarty. Second, at 48.0 yards per punt is Michael Dickson. He is only six foot two. He played for the Seattle Seahawks and is currently active. He is also from Australia.

Tom Tupa punted for Ohio State and played quarterback in the 1980s. Tupa’s career in the National Football League spanned from 1988 to 2004. He played professionally for seven teams: Pheonix Cardinals, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns, New England Patriots, New York Jets, Tampa Buccaneers, and Washington Redskins. He is six foot four inches but ranked only 60th in average yards per punt.

A cursory look at the top ten punters in National Football League history by yards per punt shows the entire top ten was six feet or taller. Several were six foot four and six foot five. Being tall likely helped them kick the ball further. With McLarty being six foot seven, he is taller than everyone who ever played the position and if he gets on the field, he will likely boom punts.

Conclusion

Tall punters kick the ball far. Nick McLarty is the tallest punter to ever play the position and Ohio State is lucky to have him on the football team. Assuming he gets on the field as a Buckeye he should have a long career in the National Football League.
