Giants Release Daniel Jones After Benching

Daniel Jones

To no one’s surprise, the New York Giants released quarterback Daniel Jones. The former first-round pick out of Duke played six seasons with the Giants with a career record of 24-45-1, including only one winning season in 2022. Most fans thought this move to depart from the quarterback would come in the offseason. But Jones asked for his release after being benched this week.

The Giants look to second-year quarterback Tommy Devito to take the reigns for the remainder of the season. This move also affects former Broncos and Seahawks quarterback Drew Locke, who signed with the Giants in the offseason. Locke was told he would be QB2 before signing with the team, and this move is stirring some controversy within the organization.

Jones and the Giants Part Ways

The Giants sit at the bottom of the NFC with a dreadful 2-8 record. After the release of Danny “Dimes,” the team announced that  Tommy Devito would be the new starting quarterback. Devito got some playing time last year, putting up solid numbers in his six career starts, as he went 3-3 with eight touchdowns versus three interceptions. The Giants expect to be at the top of the 2025 NFL draft where they could possibly select Colorado standout quarterback, Shedeur Sanders. New York has a core of young players to build around including Kayvon Thibodeaux, Brian Burns, and sensational rookie receiver Malik Nabers.

What could be next for Daniel Jones? Jones will likely not get picked up this season by any team unless an injury occurs. Any team that does claim Danny “Dimes” would owe the quarterback north of 13 million for his services. The six-year quarterback should get a few looks in the offseason by teams needing a backup QB or one in position for a quarterback competition. Jones has been in a terrible situation with New York, especially after the Saquan Barkley debacle, which saw the superstar running back walk and sign with Philly.

Final Thoughts

Daniel Jones has the talent to be in the NFL, but maybe not as a starter. It takes a certain mentality and personality to thrive in the New York sports world. I would expect Danny “Dimes” to sign with a team for a backup role. In the right situation, the dual-threat quarterback could be a valuable asset. This could be a blessing in disguise for Jones, getting out of the limelight of playing in the big market in New York.
