Germany vs Denmark takes place in Dortmund on Saturday night in one of the first sets of last-16 Euro 2024 clashes. Both teams have looked relatively strong, with Germany leading their group A with two wins and a draw that was rescued by a last-minute Niclas Fullkrug equalizer against Switzerland, and Denmark finishing 2nd behind England with three draws in group C, the lowest-scoring group of the competition. It makes for an interesting clash between an attacking side scoring a lot of goals and a conservative team with a stingy defense.
Heavyweight Hosts
Germany is one of two teams in the competition to beat in terms of attacking data. They (alongside Portugal) top the charts in passing accuracy, possession, goal attempts, and completed passes. With midfield maestro Toni Kroos returning to the national team for one last dance and in fine form, it’s easy to see why. Jamal Musiala and the mercurial Florian Wirtz have also been excellent, and in front of a home crowd at BVB Stadion Dortmund, Julian Nagelsmann’s team will feel quite confident in their ability to progress to a fourth Euro quarterfinal out of the last five. However, questions still remain in attack for Nagelsmann regarding whether to start striker Fullkrug or use Kai Havertz.
We should nevertheless very well still expect some entertainment because Germany also hasn’t been very convincing at the back; they have kept only three clean sheets in their last 17 international matches, Manuel Neuer has been guilty of a number of uncharacteristic high-profile errors, and Jonathan Tah was suspended in the last game after picking up his second yellow of the competition with Borussia Dortmund center back Nico Schlotterbeck almost certain to step in as his replacement.

On the other hand, Denmark will fancy themselves capable of an upset, having established themselves as a team that is very difficult to beat with a string of 3 stingy draws in their Group C games. They are fully capable of testing Germany, having also fired 14 shots on target through their 3 group games, and, if anything, have underperformed across those games, having scored two times while recording 3.2 xG.
Kasper Schmeichel is still their no. 1 goalkeeper, and with central defenders Simon Kjær and Andreas Christensen in front of him to protect, Højbjerg and Eriksen in midfield to provide control and creativity, and Rasmus Højlund alongside Jonas Wind up front to bring the goals, Denmark has a strong and very experienced spine that will not be easily intimidated by Germany. The last time Denmark faced Germany in a knockout stage tie came in Euro 1992, in which Denmark won 2-0.
They will be hoping history repeats itself.
