#2 Georgia Bulldogs vs #4 Alabama Crimson Tide: Tuscaloosa Thriller

Alabama won a thriller against the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Georgia Bulldogs traveled to Tuscaloosa for another top-five matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide. Both teams entered the season unbeaten with huge playoff implications on the line. Both teams have Heisman-hopeful quarterbacks Carson Beck for Georgia and Jalen Milroe for Alabama. Alabama has won 10 out of the last 11 with Georgia’s only win coming in the 2022 College Football National Championship Game.

First Quarter

Georgia kicked the ball off to start the game. Alabama came out on fire with Jalen Milroe completing back-to-back eight-yard passes to the 17-year-old phenom, Ryan Williams, then found Emmanuel Henderson Jr. for a 34-yard strike to get the ball to the Bulldogs’ 25-yard line. A few plays later Milroe took the ball into the endzone to put the Crimson Tide up seven. Georgia got the ball and quickly went three and out. Alabama got the ball on their 16-yard line, and over the next three plays gained 79 yards, and on the sixth play of the drive punched it in to go up 14-0.

On Georgia’s second possession, Trevor Etienne ran for 27 yards on the second play of the drive, but on the third play Beck and Arian Smith had some confusion and Alabama intercepted Beck and returned it to Georgia’s 22-yard line, and three plays later Alabama was up 21-0. Georgia received the ball from the kickoff and quickly went three and out once again.

Second Quarter

Alabama took over with the ball at their 33-yard line, and in six plays scored again, capped by a 36-yard Milroe QB keeper to put the Tide up 28-0. Georgia took over at their 25-yard line and finally found some success while running the ball. Georgia put together an 11-play drive and found the endzone on an Etienne seven-yard run to make the score 28-7. The rest of the half was all defense. Both quarterbacks threw an interception, and Alabama had a turnover on downs and forced a safety to end the half 30-7.

Third Quarter

The third quarter started slow with both teams punting on their first drives. Georgia got the ball after Alabama’s punt and drove 80 yards on 15 plays to make the score 30-15. Alabama scored a field goal on a seven-play drive that featured a highlight bobbling catch by Ryan Williams.

Fourth Quarter

After the kickoff Georgia got two first downs, but then Qua Russaw, Alabama defensive lineman, forced a fumble and the Tide took over on Georgia’s 47-yard line. Alabama stalled though and went three-and-out. Georgia took over on their 20-yard line and Beck found Anthony Evans III for a 21-yard pass followed by a Colbie Young 34-yard pass followed by a Lawson Luckie eight-yard touchdown taking the score to 33-21.

On the next possession, Alabama picked up one first down and was forced to punt. Georgia started at their 22-yard line and in the first two plays gained 72 yards with a 30-yard catch by Cash Jones and a 42-yard catch by Arian Smith. Two plays later Dillon Bell punched in a three-yard run to put the Dawgs down 5, 33-28.

The Fun Part

With 3:23 left on the clock, the Georgia defense forced a punt in five plays and had all the momentum. Beck, starting on his 33-yard line, found Dillon Bell for a 67-yard touchdown to put the Dawgs ahead for the first time, 34-33. They missed the two-point conversion. What would Jalen Milroe do? Find his favorite receiver, Ryan Williams. What would Ryan Williams do? Make two Georgia defenders run into each other on their one-play touchdown.

Alabama took the lead 41-34 with 2:18 left in the game. Georgia still had the momentum, and eight plays later Georgia would find themselves on the Crimson Tide’s 20-yard line with 49 seconds to go. Beck would throw up a fade to the left pylon, but Cornerback Zabien Brown “called game” and intercepted the pass to end the miracle comeback. The final score was 41-34 and the Alabama Crimson Tide were the victors.

Post Game Interviews

After the game, Alabama Head Coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about Jalen Milroe’s incredible performance saying “Coming out of the gates, I really felt like the last 2 weeks of practice, there were some steps that were made, some little things. He’s got more ahead of him too. There’s more of him to go. He did a great job. We gave him some time. He got comfortable. He did it with his legs and through the air.”

UGA Head Coach Kirby Smart was also interviewed by ABC saying: “We’ve had no answers for Milroe. He’s a great athlete — a phenomenal athlete. We’ve struggled to tackle him. We don’t have the edges. They’ve done a really good job throwing with him out of empty — and that’s been new.”
