No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs host No. 14 Clemson to Kickoff 2024 Season

Georgia Bulldogs, Clemson Tigers, NCAA

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart returns to the Gridiron 2024 after a 13-1 season in 2023 following a pair of National Championship seasons. Their opening test is a tough matchup between the AAC’s No. 14-ranked Clemson Tigers and the SEC’s No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs.  Clemson finished last season at 9-4 after a tough start to the season last year.

This game, along with a handful of other college football contests, will kick off the start of Week 1 of the college pigskin slate featuring approximately 14 hours of football starting at noon ET tomorrow. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN.

No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs Preview

The top-ranked team in the college football land has lost only two games since the start of the  2021 campaign. Unfortunately for Georgia, both of those L’s have come at the hands of the Alabama Crimson Tide. In December 2021, Georgia fell to Alabama, 41-24, during the SEC championship game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.

Last season Alabama derailed Georgia’s perfect campaign once again in the same venue at the SEC Championship again, 27-24.  The No. 6-ranked Georgia Bulldogs advanced to knock off No. 5-ranked Florida State, 63-3, on December 30, 2023, in Miami, Florida to end their 2023 season with a 13-1 record.

Georgia returns 16 starting players this season which includes 14 National Champions from 2022 and 10 title winners from 2021. With a starting rank as the best team in the nation, anything short of an opportunity in the College Football Playoff will be a failure for the Georgia Bulldogs at the end of the 2024 season.

The Clemson Tigers return quarterback Cade Klubnik to a 2023 roster for Dabo Sweeny who had a rocky start to the 2023 season at 4-4. There will be immense pressure on Coach Sweeney to produce better results given the $11.5 million contract that he holds to lead the Clemson Tigers into battle.

The defense for the Clemson Tigers returns largely intact despite a pair of high-quality transfers Toriano Pride Jr to Missouri and Andrew Mukuba to the University of Texas. Potential NFL prospects linebacker Barrett Carter and safety RJ Mickens choose to return to South Carolina for 2024.  The defense was the stronger unit for Clemson last season and will be looking to be a difference-maker entering the new campaign.

The opening bout for the No. 14 Clemson Tigers against the No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs is the toughest one they should face in the SEC schedule unless they find themselves back in the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, Georgia in December 2024.

Clemson vs. Georgia Series History

The Georgia Bulldogs lead the overall series versus the Clemson Tigers. 43-18-4. The last meeting between the two schools came near the opening of the 2021 season when Georgia escaped with a 10-3 over Clemson.

The first matchup between the schools was in 1897 with Georgia claiming a 24-0 win over Clemson. Georgia has won the last two matchups in the series and features a 7-3 record over their last 10 bouts between the painted white lines of the gridiron. Georgia Bulldogs Head Coach Kirby Smart spoke on the rivalry earlier this week:

“I think if you look at the history of Clemson and Georgia, you can go all the way back to the 80s and the great rivalries and the games that were so epic back at that time,” said Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart. “You fast forward, whatever that is, 40 years all the way up to now, and you’ve still got two perennial powers facing each other in a kickoff game. They’re both big-time rivals. The schools are pretty close to each other, so I think that’s pretty cool.”

The closest game occurred on 10/07/1995 with the Georgia Bulldogs eeking out a 19-17 win over the Clemson Tigers, 19-17.
