Gautam Gambhir: Probably The Next Glorious Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team?

Gautam Gambhir

KKR’s success in IPL 2024 was all because of Gautam Gambhir’s mentorship leading the team to its third title. This has fueled lots of speculation, which sees Gambhir as the next candidate to head coach the Indian cricket team.

Later on, as a mentor, Gambhir helped the Kings XI Punjab LSG make it to the IPL playoffs for two consecutive seasons before the franchise joined KKR in 2022 with KL Rahul as the team captain. Now, with the help of selecting the team for the T20 World Cup, Gambhir’s name has been reportedly on the line for the prestigious position of head coach of the Indian cricket team.

The newspaper published a report from Cricbuzz that reveals all the discussions that are currently going on. Before dismissing the head coaching post, reportedly a ‘very high-profile owner of an IPL franchise who is very close to the BCCI top brass’ said Gambhir is ‘almost signed as the KKR head coach,’ and an announcement will probably be made soon.

In addition, the team’s high-profile commentator revealed that high-level preparations are being made to snatch the KKR mentor as the new coach.

However, the lack of an official statement indicates that there is a chance that the negotiations are going on at several levels, potentially not only with this candidate.

BCCI’s Stance on the Gambhir’s Appointment

Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah recently refuted the claims that the Board has contacted any out-of-form Australian cricketer for the head coach. He suggested that Rahul Dravid’s successor is most probably an Indian, building on his argument that there should be a coach who possesses immense knowledge of Indian cricket.

On the coaching front, both Shah and the BCCI have said that they have not offered any former Australian cricketer the coaching position. The news that is trending in some media sections is pure misinformation.

“There are many factors in deciding the right man for our national team… We are most conscious of selecting a person who understands Indian cricket truly and has come through it step by step,” Shah continued.

With no definite word from the authorities concerned, talks of Gautam Gambhir, who might be appointed as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, have stormed the headlines. Looking at his recent performances and his understanding of the game at his present best, Gambhir seems to be the right contender for the captaincy position, as the BCCI has envisioned for Indian cricket in the meantime.
