Gautam Gambhir is now set to begin what will be his first assignment as the head coach of the Indian cricket team, and all attention will be on him when he begins with the team during the upcoming three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. The factor that generated much interest from the public was his performance with the Kolkata Knight Riders that he produced before joining the Indian national cricket team.
People are expecting him to be the best version of a coach because of the recent accomplishments he has achieved on a domestic level. But keep in mind that there is a huge level of difference between domestic and international levels. So, it is the first aspect Gautam Gambhir has to keep in mind before practicing with the team.
Sanjay Manjrekar’s Perspective on Gambhir’s Coaching

Still, while the Indian audience is high on Gambhir’s new avatar, former Indian cricketer and noted commentator Sanjay Manjrekar has raised doubt about how much of a difference a coach can make to a particular team. Recently, Manjrekar made the statement that anything that has happened or is happening to the Indian cricket team is not due to the coach but to the players and the environment of the team.
Manjrekar talked about previous Indian coaches during triumphs in the World Cup to make his point. He gave details that the Indian national team won the World Cup five times (1983, 2007, 2011, and 2023), which were coached by Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten, and Rahul Dravid, respectively. They questioned his claim that those coaching figures were the primary measure of the team’s victory and success. But there was no argument that the raw talent and determination of a team were the clinching factors. , Manjrekar stated:
No coach, Lalchand Rajput, Gary Kirsten or Dravid. Coaches when India won WCs in 1983, 2007, 2011 & 2023. It’s really about Indian cricket, not who the coach is. Time we stop thinking there is a direct correlation.
Suryakumar Yadav and Rohit Sharma are In Focus
This tendency is set to continue in the T20I series against Sri Lanka when Gambhir takes up his new post and leads the Indian side with Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav will be able to put his leadership capacity into practice after he has successfully proved his skills in the past series. After the T20Is, Rohit Sharma will once again take up his position as captain in the ODI series of cricket. The new dawn of Indian cricket has begun with GG at the center of control, and with Yadav and Sharma as the champions, the new combination is expected to be tested.
The first cricket series with the Sri Lankan team also becomes the inauguration event for Gambhir as head coach and also paves the way for more prospects for the Indian cricket team in the future. This continues to be an evolving topic regarding whether the coach is extremely influential or whether there is simply too much depth and talent in the squad to be stifled commercially, and all eyes will now be on how he will mold the team in the coming matches.
The potential in the coaching of Gautam has been quite highlighted in the past; now is the time to prove it at the international level. Fans are anticipating Suryakumar Yadav and Gambhir to get to where they are dreaming.
