Gambhir vs. Dravid: Coaching Styles Compared

Gambhir

Ravichandran Ashwin recently discussed the coaching styles of Gautam Gambhir and Rahul Dravid. It has been a little over two months since Gambhir took the position of India’s head coach, and Ashwin believes that there is quite a difference. Despite having very different natures, each of them has an established career as a player.

Ambiance of Relaxation by Gambhir

Ashwin described Gambhir as a “relaxed rancho.” He has a feeling that there is no pressure under Gambhir’s leadership. The morning team huddles are laid-back, with Gambhir inviting the players to join without much of an expectation. The contrast is sharply opposite when it comes to Dravid, who preferred a more regimented environment.

Everything needs to be in place under Rahul Dravid. Ashwin said that even the smallest things bothered Dravid. He would complain that bottles had not been placed at specific spots at a particular time. This detail was a reflection of the disciplined style of David, whom many players respected.

A People’s Coach

Gambhir is likely to click with the players due to his easy-going nature. Ashwin of course observed that Gambhir’s non-serious nature could work in favor of allowing him a rapport with the team. In this manner, the “people’s man” style might create a favorable ambiance where the players feel at ease and perform with enthusiasm.

Gambhir can do well balancing and making the team quite competitive with support from experienced players like Ashwin, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma under such pressure. People are excited to see how things are going to shape up in the coming games. Gambhir’s tenure as the coach started with mixed results, though. India did win the T20I series against Sri Lanka but lost the ODI series. Yet his maiden Test against Bangladesh was rather promising. Ashwin played outstandingly along with Ravindra Jadeja, as India went on to win the match easily.

Team Performance Boost

Still, India lost early at 144 for 6 in that Test, but then made a brilliant recovery. The partnership of Ashwin and Jadeja for 199 runs before further jeopardizing the cause was a big combination. The team managed to post a great total of 376. Thus, Gambhir’s coaching style, explaining concepts of teamwork and adaptability, would testify to the resilience of his stature.

The first Test, having passed them by, is the second Test to be played in Kanpur against Bangladesh. India waited for this Test with great morale following such a commanding victory, while Gambhir would test his leadership throughout the rest of the series. Punters like Jasprit Bumrah, who performed in the last test, will be challenged to keep the momentum going in the coming tests.

Conclusion: New Era in Coaching

In short, the transition from Dravid to Gambhir represents a change in style, wherein the more structured approach of Dravid in his pursuit of order and discipline can only be matched by a carefree attitude. What follows is an open environment that will be reflected in performance and success in due course.
