Gabby Thomas is a name that everybody knows in the track and field world. But nobody was quite sure if she was going to take the gold medal in the coveted 200M final in the Paris Olympics. Of course, she posted the fastest time in the world this year, but fans still thought that Richardson, Jackson, or Albert had a fighting chance at taking first.
Hoover, with Richardson failing to qualify for the final heat of the 200M, Fraser Pryce pulling out in a strange circumstance, and Jackson removing herself from the 200M to focus on the Jamaican relay team, everything lined up perfectly for Thomas to take home the gold medal for Team USA.
Gabby Thomas Wins Gold
Gabby Thomas crossed the finish line first in the much anticipated 200M women’s final event in Paris, France, last night in front of 8,000+ fans in the stadium. The shocked expression showed her disbelief at getting on the podium and winning her first individual Olympic gold, but everybody who had kept up with her results all season wasn’t too surprised.
But Gabby Thomas remained humble, grateful, and honored to have won a gold medal in her career.
“I’m really in disbelief because having an Olympic gold medal is something in my wildest dreams,” But at the same time, I know how hard I’ve fought for it.This has been six years in the making, head down, working hard, going to really hard meets, pushing yourself, and now it’s here and I’ve done it. This is the happiest moment of my life.”
Although she was the favorite to win first in the event, Gabby Thomas still didn’t believe she could do it until she crossed the line less than half a second in front of Julien Alfred, the 100M winner, and Brittany Brown, another Team USA member who crossed the line in 22.2 seconds.
As soon as she shot out of the starting blocks, everybody watching knew it was hers to lose. She looked strong from the start and only gained ground as the curve came – the point in the race when typical 100M racers start to fall back to the middle of the pack and 400M runners are passed by the faster sprinters. Her long stride, commanding arm swing, and incredible form powered her past her opponents as she crossed the finish line.
Who is Gabby Thomas?
If you haven’t kept up with the running world in the past few years, you might not know who Gabby Thomas is. She doesn’t have as “big” of a personality as Shericka Jackson from Jamaica or command as much attention as Sha’Carri Richardson when it comes to the spotlight. But that doesn’t make her any less of a personality or any less of a runner. Gabby Thomas is a Harvard graduate who has a Master’s degree and has conducted postgraduate research in the health field. Her calm demeanor, friendly personality, and graciousness towards competition make her a fan favorite among not only the viewers but the other athletes as well.
She hopes to be a role model for younger girls who want to become professional athletes or excel in any specific field. Her ability to balance school work, post-graduate scientific studies, and professional elite sports inspires kids who want to do it all.
“I want young girls to look at us as strong female athletes and feel like they can do it, too,” she said in a news conference after the race. I want them to feel they’re encouraged to go into professional sports, I want them to feel encouraged to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small.”
