French Open: Matteo Arnaldi Knocks Out Madrid Open Champion In 3rd Round Victory

The third round of the French Open continued on the last day of May, with some big matches on the docket. The winner of the 2024 Madrid Open, Andrey Rublev, clashed with young Italian star, Matteo Arnaldi. The Italian defeated the Russian top 10 player in the straight sets.

In other matches, top seeds like Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Stefano Tsitsipas, won their matches to make it to the French Open fourth round. The first of June clashes include Daniil Medvedev and Alex De Minaur who have both qualified to the fourth round while Novak Djokovic’s match against Lorenzo Musetti is coming up.

How will the rest of the tournament unfold?

Rublev Undone By Spirited Italian

Andrey Rublev in the French Open

Matteo Arnaldi won the first set against Andrey Rublev after a tie-break. At set point, Arnaldi found himself being dragged all over the court by Rublev’s powerful forehand shots. When Rublev tried to finish off the point with a drop shot, Arnaldi came racing up to the net to score an incredible volley.

All through the second set, Arnaldi proved impervious to Rublev’s forehand winners, blocking them routinely, and always forcing Rublev to hit one more shot. He won the second set with a powerful serve to the T, with Rublev’s return going long.

Arnaldi’s break of Rublev’s serve in the third set of their French Open tilt came in the seventh game of the match. Arnaldi swatted Rublev’s serve beyond the Russian for a winner. He went on to serve out the match the games later for a 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 win.

On his serve, Arnaldi was able to secure 64 points, surrendering 23 to Rublev. Rublev won 71 points on his serve but Arnaldi was always on him like a hawk, winning 52 points on the Russian’s serve.
