Freddie Freeman Joins Elite Company With 2024 World Series MVP

Freddie Freeman capped off an elite World Series run.

Los Angeles Dodgers Freddie Freeman made countless bits of history in the 2024 World Series against the New York Yankees. In Game 5 last night at Yankee Stadium, Freeman hit a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning as part of LA’s five run inning. These two RBI gave Freddie Freddie Freeman 12 RBI in the World Series which tied him for the most in league history along with Bobby Richardson in 1960. Freeman also made MLB history by hitting a home run in four straight World Series games and six consecutive World Series games dating back to when he was with the Atlanta Braves in 2021.

Freeman’s home run in Game 1 was a walk-off grand slam. It was the first time in World Series history this happened. Freddie Freeman is now the 12th player in the history of Major League Baseball to win a World Series MVP and a regular season MVP.

He joins a list that consists of Johnny Bench, Roberto Clemente, Rollie Fingers, Bob Gibson, Reggie Jackson, Sandy Koufax, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Pete Rose, Mike Schmidt, and Willie Stargell. Freeman won the NL MVP in 2020 with the Atlanta Braves. How will Freddie Freeman’s historic World Series performance be remembered?

Circumstances Surrounding Freddie Freeman’s World Series Run

Freddie Freeman is one of the best players in the league, but he was not 100% heading into the “Fall Classic.” He was hurt in the NLDS and NLCS and was not himself leading into the 2024 World Series. He suffered an ankle sprain on September 26 that hampered him. This injury kept Freeman out of three of LA’s playoff games in the NLDS and NLCS.

Freddie Freeman provided some insight into his injury heading into the World Series on Fox’s postgame show with the Willie Mays World Series Most Valuable Player Award in tow. “Those days off in between were huge. In the ALDS and NLCS, there was a fence and I was always on the other side. Trying to get the the pain, the ankle swelling all down and I just could never get in front of it. Those few days helped me get on this side of the fence. Got me in a great spot where I could work on my swing in those few days. I found a cure and it worked.”

Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts announced following last night’s game that Freddie Freeman was also playing with a previously unreported intercostal(rib) injury in the first two rounds of the playoffs. Freeman’s World Series run became more historic by the game.

Final Thoughts

Freddie Freeman has a claim, and a strong one at that, he just completed the best series in playoff history. He finished the World Series 6-of-20 with four home runs and 12 RBI. Over the first three games of the World Series, Freeman had seven RBI while the New York Yankees as a team scored seven runs. This is Freeman’s second career World Series win and is another award in the trophy case that will culminate in a bust in Cooperstown five years after he decides to hang up his bat.
