According to Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd, Frank Vogel has joined the Mavericks’ coaching staff as a coaching consultant. Vogel, 51, has had a coaching career in the NBA since 2001 with stints for the Boston Celtics (2001-2004), Philadelphia 76ers (2004-2005), Indiana Pacers (2007-2011 and 2011-2016), Orlando Magic (2016-2018), Los Angeles Lakers (2019-2022), and Phoenix Suns (2023-2024).
Vogel never played in the NBA but played NCAA men’s basketball at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, as a point guard in Division III before transferring to the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. There he served as a student manager for the Kentucky men’s basketball team and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology in 1998.
The Mavericks’ addition of Vogel to their coaching staff seemed to be worth their time, effort, and energy. Vogel’s NBA championship experience might help the Mavericks succeed this upcoming season, as the Mavericks strive for a return to the NBA Finals in 2025. Read on for more details.
Jason Kidd’s Statement About Frank Vogel
Dallas Mavericks Head Coach Jason Kidd reported that former Phoenix Suns Head Coach Frank Vogel joined the team as a coaching consultant. Vogel was fired by the Suns after just one season in Phoenix and swiftly hired former Milwaukee Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer to replace him.
It wasn’t long before Vogel found another coaching gig, but Kidd appeared to spend some time to get Vogel’s response. Kidd said on media day, “It took a lot of begging … but he was talked into it, and I’m happy he said ‘yes’… Being able to work for Frank was something that helped me with my coaching… Hopefully, we can win another title together.”
Vogel’s Previous NBA Experience
Frank Vogel’s previous NBA coaching experience can work in his favor and possibly overshadow his brief, one-year stint with the Phoenix Suns for the 2023-2024 NBA season. Vogel led the Suns to a 49-33 record, advanced to the 2024 NBA playoffs as the No. 6 seed, and was swept by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the First Round.
The Suns officially fired Vogel on May 9, 2024, after the team was handed a four-game sweep at the hands of the Timberwolves, who proceeded to eliminate the Denver Nuggets in seven games in the Western Conference Semifinals before getting eliminated by the Dallas Mavericks in five games in the Western Conference Finals.
Vogel Still Collects Cash From Phoenix
The Phoenix Suns have moved on from Frank Vogel in terms of the head coaching realm, but Vogel is still collecting cash from the Suns. He initially signed a five-year, $31 million contract in Phoenix before being fired after just one season on the job.
Now, the Suns are working with their third head coach, Mike Budenholzer, since 2020. Former NBA head coach and player Monty Williams served as the Suns’ head coach from 2019-2023. The Suns fired Williams, 52, after the Suns’ elimination by the eventual NBA champion Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Semifinals. Williams’ last coaching stint was with the Detroit Pistons from 2023-2024.
