One of the mainstays of the Pakistan team in the 1960s, Saeed Ahmed, has died at the age of 86. The former captain of the national team, breathed his last in Lahore on March 20, 2024, after a brief period of illness.
Born in Jalandhar in 1937, when it was British India (now part of Indian Punjab), Saeed was a dashing batsman who played 41 Test matches, accumulating 2,991 runs, including 5 centuries and 16 half-centuries. He made his Test debut against the West Indies in 1958 and ended his Test career in Melbourne during the 1972–73 season.
His elegant batting style, especially his strong shots, quickly made a name. Saeed played in 41 Tests for Pakistan between 1958 and 1973, with an average score of 40.41. He scored five centuries, three of which were against India.
Saeed Ahmed’s Contribution to Pakistan Cricket
Saeed made his debut against the West Indies at the young age of 20, scoring 65 runs and forming a strong partnership with Hanif Mohammad. Between 1958 and 1973, Saeed participated in 41 Test matches for Pakistan and the all-round player scored massive runs at an average of 40.41.
He even led the Pakistan team for a brief period, captaining three Tests against England in 1969. Besides his batting, he was also a decent off-spinner, taking 22 wickets during his career.
After retiring from cricket, Saeed chose to stay away from the game and lived quietly in Lahore. Notably, he lived alone there, with few friends or relatives. His health declined over the years, leading to frequent hospital visits. He passed away on a Wednesday afternoon.
PCB Expresses Sympathies for Saeed Ahmed’s Death
PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Pakistan Cricket Board, highlighting his commitment to Pakistan cricket.
“The PCB is saddened over the demise of one of our former Test captains and expresses deep condolences to the family of Saeed Ahmed,” Naqvi stated.
“He served Pakistan with all his heart and the PCB honors his record and services for the Test team.”
Younus Ahmed, Saeed’s half-brother, also played four Test matches for Pakistan. Imran Khan called up him for the 1987 India tour, and he played in a Test match.
Saeed Ahmed will always be remembered for his remarkable contributions to cricket, leaving an enduring impact on the sport.
