The Dynasty: New England Patriots, a new docuseries detailing the Pats’ 20-year adventure, premiered back in February. Former New England Patriots alumni weighed in on how the Apple TV+ limited docuseries portrayed the team. Ex-captains Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison, as well as ex-players, shared how much the doc painted the team and former head coach Bill Belichick in a negative light.
Ex-New England Patriots: Belichick and Players Portrayed Negatively in Apple TV+ Doc
Meanwhile, Bill Belichick‘s exodus from the New England Patriots left many fans wondering his next moves might be. In the midst of the upset, Apple TV’s new limited docuseries The Dynasty was released back in February. Significantly, the docuseries details a many of the controversies that surrounded the team during this period, including Deflategate. Former captains Devin McCourty and Rodney Harrison were interviewed for the limited series. Reflecting on the 10-episode series, Harrison was blunt that the amount of screentime for players and staff was split unevenly, stating, “It just seemed so Tom [Brady] and Bill-centric.”
The former safety went on to elaborate “It didn’t tell the stories of me and Corey Dillion. It was centered around some things that I wasn’t really feeling. I just stopped watching. All they had me saying was ‘F— them all. F— them all.”
McCourty affirmed many of what Rodney had to say as he was in a similar position. “I was thinking, ‘Man, this is gonna be great,'” Devin said. “The longest thing I talked about was 2016 and Trump and the letter and everything. Everything that we all gave to the 20 years that it compassed, they only hit on anything that was negative.”
Devin McCourty and Gronk Call Out Bill Belichick’s Soft Side
The Dynasty omits many of the Patriots’ highlights, at least according to Devin. Also, it did not touch on more of the good the Pats have done. Specifically, he mentions the case of William Allen. Allen is a 48-year-old Brockton, MA resident who was falsely accused and eventually convicted of murdering Purvis Bester, a victim of armed robbery back in February 1994.
Consequently, the Massachusetts State County sentenced Allen to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Belichick and fellow Pats staffers signed a letter urging Governor Charlie Baker to recommend Allen’s commutation, and a clemency petition was granted. William Allen was released.
According to the official New England Patriots website, Tahsaan Hall, a former director of the ACLU of Massachusetts’ Racial Justice Program, brought Allen’s case to Devin’s attention. “He was one of the first people [to get involved] after I read and told everybody about this story. He raised his hand and said, ‘How do we help?’ You know the impact of Bill Belichick’s name on anything in Massachusetts.
Eventually, Ronaldo Perry, the actual killer, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was released on parole in 2011. Thereupon, many New England Patriots staffers signed a letter urging Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker to recommend Allen’s commutation. In January, a clemency petition was finally granted.
Lastly, former tight end Rob Gronkowski was another Patriot who furthermore sang Belichick’s praises. “Coach Belichick was the standard. And without him, none of this was possible, Gronkowski said. “There’s no doubt about that. And to see him go was sad. I mean, I had a tear. Without him, like I said, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”
