MLB News: Former MVP Lands on the Injured List with Back Injury Before 2024 MLB Trade Deadline

Former MVP Christian Yelich, Milwaukee Brewers

The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching and everyone is waiting to see who is dealt. Former MVPs and Cy Young winners could be calling a new place home for the next few months as teams look to bolster their roster. However, the Milwaukee Brewers are going to need to look for some lineup protection as the team announced that 2024 All-Star and former NL MVP Christian Yelich has landed on the 10-day Injured List with lower back inflammation.

Christian Yelich has been playing well this season for the Milwaukee Brewers as in 73 games, the former MVP has a .909 OPS with 11 home runs, 42 RBIs, 44 runs scored and 21 stolen bases on 22 attempts. He currently leads the National League in batting average (.315) and on base percentage (.406) as well. It will be interesting to see how he and the Milwaukee Brewers do going forward.

What other former MVPs could be on the move at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline?

With Christian Yelich on the Injured List, that takes him off the list of former MVPs that could be traded, even though Yelich was not going to be moved. However, that does not mean all players with Most Valuable Player awards are safe from relocating. One player who is likely going to be finding a new home after the trade deadline is 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger. He has been hitting pretty well with a 108 OPS+ but is going to be likely traded as the Chicago Cubs are looking towards the future and teams will pay for a corner outfield/first baseman that can hit well.

Another former MVP who can be on the move in the next week is 2022 NL MVP Paul Goldschmidt. He is in the final season of his five-year, $130 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals and while it is a bigger trading contract than most expiring deals, Goldschmidt has not been the hitter people were expecting out of him this season with the Cards. He has an 84 OPS+ with 1 home runs, 38 RBIs and 48 runs scored in 97 games, so injuries have not been a reason why.

There are a lot of players who realistically can be moved. Contenders are going to be in the market to trade for some new faces that can be impacted throughout the stretch run of the 2024 MLB season. It will be interesting to see which teams decide to make a move and which are going to stay on the same page with their current roster.
