Les Miles was less than ceremonially fired as the head coach of the LSU Tigers in 2016. Rumors began to swirl during the 2015 season that LSU would attempt to buy out Miles after the season, but the athletic department chose to retain him. When the Tigers began the 2016 season 2-2, Miles was fired.
Having left the school as its second-winningest head coach, Miles was considered a near lock to eventually be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2023, the NCAA announced LSU would vacate 37 victories between 2012 and 2015 due to violations involving payment to a player’s family. The vacating of victories left Miles just shy of the mandatory .600 winning percentage needed for induction.
Les Miles Files Lawsuit Against LSU
On Monday, the former LSU Tigers head coach filed a lawsuit against the school. Claiming LSU vacated wins that made him ineligible for the College Football Hall of Fame, Miles is seeking “appropriate remedy for the blot placed on his good name and reputation” by LSU’s decision to vacate 37 victories between 2012 and 2015.
The school made the decision to vacate the victories as a result of a scandal involving former LSU offensive lineman Vadal Alexander. Alexander’s father was given over $180,000 by an LSU booster. The funds were found to have been embezzled from a children’s hospital in Baton Rouge.
Hall of Fame Career Deemed Ineligible Due to Vacating of Victories
Les Miles spent 18 seasons as the head coach of Oklahoma State, LSU, and Kansas, compiling a career record of 145-73. His career win percentage during his 18 years was .665, well over the mandatory .600 winning percentage needed for consideration to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. During his time at LSU, Miles won two SEC championships and a national title in 2011.
Les Miles was no stranger to controversy, however. His tenure at Oklahoma State was investigated for giving players improper benefits. Direct payments were allegedly given to players for fake jobs. Miles was also accused of having tutors do players’ schoolwork to keep them eligible.
In 2013, Miles underwent investigation for an inappropriate relationship with a female student employee. As a result, Miles was reprimanded and prohibited from being alone with female student staffers. After his dismissal from LSU, Miles went on to coach for the Kansas Jayhawks.
With LSU deciding to vacate 37 victories, Miles’ record dipped to 108-73. His winning percentage dropped to .596, making him ineligible for induction.
