In the Backdrop of Ohio State/Penn State, A Look at Other Classic College Games

Will Howard helped Ohio State defeat Nebraska on Saturday. Football

The football showdown on Saturday in State College, Pennsylvania, when #4 Ohio State takes on #3 Penn State, will be a critical win for either team. It is too bad the injury bug has hit Ohio State at this midpoint of the football season.

Ohio State has two starters out, including their starting left tackle, Josh Simmons, which is a huge loss for the Buckeyes. In football, the left tackle protects the blind side of a right-handed throwing quarterback, like Will Howard. The starting left tackle is also important for the running game. The game between Ohio State and Penn State is a titanic showdown, and this article opines about ten other gigantic college football games. It could be fun to read and disagree with the list.

10. No. 1 Notre Dame 10, No. 2 Michigan State 10 (Nov. 19, 1966)

Two dominant teams and star players.  Star players included both Terry Hanratty and Bubba Smith. Of course, it ended in controversy when Notre Dame opted to run the clock out in the closing minutes in East Lansing. The Irish, however, would win the national championship instead of the Spartans—or Alabama, that year’s only undefeated team.

 9. No. 2 Miami (Fla.) 28, No. 1 Oklahoma 16 (Sept. 27, 1986)

The Sooners were defending college football national champions, led by several All-Americans on their roster.  Vinny Testaverde threw four touchdown passes to lead the Hurricanes to a convincing victory in the Orange Bowl.  Miami, the ‘U,’ finished undefeated in the regular season before losing to Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.

8. No. 1 LSU 9, No. 2 Alabama 6 (Nov. 5, 2011)

These were two of the best college football defenses in the nation, and the game played out as a defensive struggle. The Crimson Tide missed four field goals as Nick Saban threw a fit, and Drew Alleman’s 25-yard field goal in overtime gave the Tigers a 9-6 win. Alabama would win the BCS championship game over LSU, though.

7. No. 2 Miami (Fla.) 17, No. 1 Florida St. 16 (Nov. 16, 1991)

The U appears again in this list of top college football games, but Florida State was 10-0. Florida State welcomed the 8-0 Hurricanes in a home game for them. If you remember, Larry Jones scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:01 remaining. But Florida State missed a 34-yard field-goal opportunity wide right.

6. No. 1 Texas 15, No. 2 Arkansas 14 (Dec. 6, 1969)

This Southwest Conference final game had two 9-0, highly-ranked college football teams. Arkansas led 14-0 at halftime in Fayetteville, but the University of Texas rallied for 15 points in the fourth quarter to win.

5. No. 1 Army 0, No. 2 Notre Dame 0 (Nov. 9, 1946)

It was the second Game of the Century post-World War II when the service academies dominated college football. The game took place at Yankee Stadium. Army drove deep into Notre Dame territory six times. The 0-0 tie was a game for defense lovers,

4. No. 1 LSU 46, No. 2 Alabama 41 (Nov 9, 2019)

Joe Burrow, the current quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, passed for 393 yards and three TDs in a shootout to edge current Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. LSU went on to win the national championship.

3. No. 2 Notre Dame 31, No. 1 Florida State 24 (Nov. 13, 1993)

ESPN College GameDay made its first college campus visit. Notre Dame scored the first touchdown on a 32-yard reverse by Adrian Jarrell and built a 24-7 lead. Notre Dame’s Shawn Wooden knocked a pass down to seal a 31-24 upset.

2. No. 1 Nebraska 35, No. 2 Oklahoma 31 (Nov. 25, 1971)

Johnny Rodgers’ punt return for a touchdown in the first quarter set the tone between undefeated Nebraska and Oklahoma at Owen Field in Norman, OK. The Sooners led 31-28 in the fourth quarter, but a game-winning touchdown by Jeff Kinney gave Nebraska the win.

1. No. 1 Ohio State 42, No. 2 Michigan 39 (Nov. 18, 2006)

This was a great game. The Buckeyes and Wolverines met in Columbus with the same 11-0 record and played a shootout as quarterbacks Troy Smith and Chad Henne were at the controls. Smith threw four touchdown passes and won the game and the Heisman Trophy, but Ohio State lost the national championship game.

Conclusion

College football is part of America and whether you think this list is okay or needs some work it should be fun to debate. Hopefully, you have some great memories of these games. Should Ohio State be number one?  The upcoming game between Ohio State and Penn State has the potential to make this list next year.
