# 10 Florida State With Surprising Loss To Georgia Tech

Florida State

The nation’s tenth-ranked Florida State Seminoles started their season at the Aner Lingus College Football Classic in Dublin, Ireland, against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Most college experts expected a win from the Seminoles, and college fans wanted to see them prove their rank. Florida State leads the all-time matchup against the Yellow Jackets at 15-11-1.

So, how did the Seminoles fail to add another win to the column? The tenth-ranked team had one of the best rosters in the nation but lost 21-24 to Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets had no top-star transfers and worked with most of the same personnel from last season. What did the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets do to upset the Seminoles?

No Run Game

Florida State failed to gain over 100 yards in the run game. Roydell Williams led the Seminoles with 12 carries for 38 yards and one touchdown. Lawrance Toafili also had a touchdown with three carries for 32 yards. After the final whistle, Florida State only gained 98 yards in the run game. The Yellow Jackets would rack up 190 yards in rushing, with Jamal Haynes leading the way with 11 carries for 75 yards with two touchdowns.

Even though Florida State couldn’t move on the ground, the air attack couldn’t get a score either. Quarterback for the Seminoles, D.J. Uiagalelei, threw to eight different receivers but couldn’t get it across the goal line. Uiagalelei threw 19 for 27 for 193 yards. He transferred from the Oregon State Beavers this offseason. Wide receivers Ja’Khi Douglas and Malik Benson had four receptions a piece, totaling 94 yards. Florida State would tie the game up with 6:33 left in the fourth.

Yellow Jackets Close It Out

Georgia Tech Quarterback Haynes King passed for 146 yards on 11 for 16 completions. He would also run for 54 yards on 15 carries. Time of possession was almost even at 30:39 to 29.21, but the Seminoles had the ball a 1:18 longer than the Yellow Jackets. King would fumble the ball from a bad snap down on Florida State’s 28-yard line. The ball would end up on the Seminole’s 38-yard line with 55 seconds left in regulation.

King would complete a pass to receiver Eric Singleton Jr for 12 yards down to Florida State’s 26-yard line. The Yellow Jackets would call a timeout with five seconds left in the game. Kicker Aidan Birr would kick a 44-yard field goal to end the game for Georgia Tech. Brent Key, coach of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, was excited about the win and expressed his delight to James Morgan of USA Today,

“I’m proud of the guys’ effort. They played four quarters of football. They’ve got a mentality of playing that way.”

Conclusion

Maybe this was just a lousy execution game for the Seminoles. Perhaps something was going on in the background we couldn’t see. One thing is for sure: a team will not win the National Championship in the season’s first game, and Florida State does have some time to work out its kinks. The next game for the Seminoles is against the Boston College at home on September 2. Will Florida State show us a better example of themselves? We shall see when the time comes.
