Florida Panthers Coach Takes Stanley Cup to Local Parkland Schools 9/6/24

Stanley Cup

Just ten weeks after the Florida Panthers won the Stanley Cup, the iconic trophy made its way to Parkland, FL, on Friday. The hallowed Stanley Cup first went to Westglades Middle School, which is located right behind Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Students took selfies and enjoyed seeing the Stanley Cup in person. It was exciting for all Panthers fans, students, and staff. Florida Panthers Goaltender Coach Rob Tallas coordinated the magical day.

Tallas took the Stanley Cup to Parkland on Friday for all the students and staff at WestGlades Middle and Marjory Stoneman Douglas to see. According to Broward County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn, “This is so special, a great opportunity for our kids to come and see the Stanley Cup and take pictures.”

The Stanley Cup is one of the hardest trophies in all sports to win. When a team gets to the playoffs in the NHL, it plays a best-of-seven series and then has to survive three rounds before even making it to the Stanley Cup Final round. The Florida Panthers waited 30 years to win their first Cup in franchise history. Fans around South Florida have also waited for this iconic moment, making it even more exceptional for Panther fans.

The Florida Panthers are coming to a summer close with their tour of the Stanley Cup. Later this month, the Panthers will start training camp with all their prospects and rookies. The first preseason game for the Panthers is September 22 against the Nashville Predators at Amerant Bank Arena. The Panthers will play four pre-season games before making roster adjustments for the start of the NHL season on October 2.

October 2 will kick off the new NHL season, and the Florida Panthers will try to defend their title as champions. The Pittsburgh Penguins is another team that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017, while the last team to win back-to-back Cups is the Tampa Bay Lightning, winning in 2020 and 2021. Of course, the Panthers hope to win back-to-back Cups and maybe even build a dynasty.

The Panthers participate in a healthy cross-state rivalry with Tampa Bay in what is affectionately called the ‘Alligator Alley’ series.  2024 was the first time that the Panthers ever beat their nemesis, Tampa Bay, in a playoff series. In the words of Michael Russo for the N.Y. Times, the Panthers slayed the dragon in 2024. Which Florida team will have the upper hand this time around?
