This Rookie Showcase tournament is all about getting experience on and off the ice. While also building on the skills to improve a player’s game. The Panthers’ prospects were pressuring early and often in the offensive zone in the first period. The Panthers snapped it around and put on a class in puck control. The Panthers came out with an opportunity that did score on the breakaway by the rookie first time. Rookie Showcase attendee Hunter St. Martin. He flipped the puck past netminder Yaniv Perets to give Florida a 1-0 lead at 4:24.

Joining in on the fun at the 9:37 mark, Riley Hughes snapped in a backhander from Ben Steeves to give the Florida Panthers a 2-0 lead. The Panthers outshot the Hurricanes 13-4 in the first period. The game quickly turned around and Carolina came out strong in the second period, outshooting Florida 8-3 through the halfway point. The Hurricanes cut the Panthers lead in half, by lighting the lamp at 10:52 to make it 2-1. Withstanding the Carolina attack, Florida would hold the lead for the remainder of the period. As the game progressed, Carolina came away with the win of 7-3.

Despite losing, the Panthers still had some positive takeaways from this game that can help build upon as camp rolls and the pre-season.

Head Coach Geordie Kinnear said, “I think the first half we were really good, Probably halfway through they got a little bit of momentum, and then obviously the second half we weren’t happy with, but the first half was really good.”

Next Game Against Tampa Bay Lightning

The Panthers’ next game in this Rookie Showcase tournament will take on the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sept 16th at 11a.m ET in their third and final game in the tournament in Nashville. The Florida Panthers will look to have the same start as the last game against Carolina but want to finish strong and not have the game get away from them. This game can be streamed online on the Florida Panthers website.

After this Rookie Showcase tournament, the Florida Panthers will begin their four-game pre-season games starting September 22nd against the Nashville Predators before the start of the new 2024 NHL season. The Panthers will play the Lightning on Oct 2nd at the Kia Center in Orlando.
