The WWE King and Queen of the Ring tournaments have been going on since Backlash 2024, and now the final matchups for each bracket have been set. Queen of the Ring is a concept that was first created in 2021, with Zelina Vega taking home the first-ever crown. King of the Ring has been a prestigious tournament in WWE history, with names such as Edge and Steve Austin having their big breaks after winning the crown.
The King and Queen of the Ring PPV is set to take place on May 25th, 2024, in the Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The event will also feature a match between Logan Paul and Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship, as well as Sami Zayn vs. Chad Gable vs. Bronson Reed for the Intercontinental Championship, and Becky Lynch vs. Liv Morgan for the Women’s World Championship.
King of The Ring Finals
The King of the Ring finals will feature two of the most popular wrestlers in the WWE right now, Randy Orton and Gunther.
Gunther won the Raw bracket in dominating fashion, as he submitted and pinned multiple top names to advance to the finals. His first match was against Sheamus, a legend in the business who ended up tapping out. He then went on to defeat Kofi Kingston and Jey Uso, two other wrestlers who have cemented themselves as legends in wrestling history.
Randy Orton’s first match was against one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, AJ Styles. It was a back-and-forth battle, but Orton was able to get the win with the RKO. He then went on to defeat future superstar Carmelo Hayes, someone who was recently called up from NXT. His semi-final matchup was against a legend in his own right, Tama Tonga, who was defeated via pinfall even though Solo Sikoa attempted to interfere in the match.
Randy Orton and Gunther have never faced each other 1 on 1, so it will definitely be interesting and enjoyable to watch these two top stars face off against each other.
Queen of the Ring Finals
The Queen of the Ring finals will see two unfamiliar and unlikely faces wrestling for the crown in Lyra Valkyria and Nia Jax.
The Irresistible Force was able to dominate the Smackdown women’s division to make it to the finals. Her first match was against Naomi, one of the top stars of the division, whom she was able to defeat in just 8 minutes via pinfall.
Her second match was against Jade Cargill, the undefeated superstar who made waves by signing with WWE in late 2023. Jax was able to hand Cargill her first-ever loss in WWE, though it was via disqualification. She then went on to face Bianca Belair in the semi-finals, someone who many consider to be the face of the women’s division, though Nia was able to dominate her and pin her clean to advance to the finals.
Lyra Valkyria was recently called up to Raw during the WWE Draft and has already made waves as she sees herself in the Queen of the Ring finals. Her first two wins were against Natalya and Shayna Baszler, two veterans who gave it their all but just couldn’t hang with the young star. In the semi-finals, she defeated former WWE Women’s Champion Iyo Sky, in a match that proved she could hang in the top of the division.
World Title Match at Summerslam
On May 23rd, WWE CCO Triple H announced that the winners of each tournament would receive a world championship shot at Summerslam 2024 based on their respective brands.
This is huge news as, in recent years, people have complained that winning the King & Queen of the Ring tournaments is an achievement that doesn’t really reward anything but a crown they wear for a few months. This has definitely upped the stakes in the tournament, as now each wrestler is fighting for something big and a real opportunity.
Nia Jax and WWE Women’s Champion Bayley already had a segment regarding this on the May 24th edition of Smackdown. Nia explained to Bayley that once she defeats Lyra in the Queen of the Ring finals, she’s coming for Bayley and the WWE Women’s Championship at Summerslam.
