On Saturday, the USA men’s basketball team won its fifth straight Olympic gold medal with a 98-87 win over the French men’s basketball team at Bercy Arena. Stephen Curry’s 24 points helped the USA put away France in the final minute after a back-and-forth game that thrilled professional basketball fans. However, the FIBA voted LeBron James as the 2024 Olympics MVP.
“We just kept our composure,” LeBron James said after the game, according to CNN. “We have been in some tight games throughout the preliminary games, and we had a tight game against Serbia, so we knew we were going to get everybody’s biggest punch, so it was all about staying composed and willing our way to victory.”
Curry dominated in the USA vs. France game, but James earned the MVP. Read on for three keys about James’ MVP honors just minutes after another gold medal.
LeBron James Earns 2024 Olympics MVP
The USA vs. France game saw a 14-point lead shrink to six points. France cut the USA’s lead to three points in the final minutes of Saturday’s game. Stephen Curry helped the USA with four three-pointers for a vintage performance in his first-ever Olympics. However, Curry’s efforts didn’t lead to the MVP honors, as the FIBA voted for LeBron James as the MVP due to his consistency and versatility.
“Obviously, I understand it was gonna be a really tough task with some great teams that we were gonna have to face, and there’s a sense of relief at the end,” Curry said of his Olympics experience, according to CNN. “But it’s more like a sense of accomplishment, obviously, knowing what we were able to do.”
Curry didn’t seem to be bothered by James’ MVP honors. The Golden State Warriors star added that he had the best time of his life because this might not come around again.
LeBron James’ Statistics at the 2024 Olympics
LeBron James averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.3 steals in six Olympic games, all of which were USA men’s basketball wins. James played a steadying role in the USA’s 98-87 win over France and posted 14 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals in 33 minutes of play. The Los Angeles Lakers star joined Kevin Durant and Manu Ginobili as the lone players to be named Olympic MVP in history.
In addition, James was named to the Olympic All-Star Five. The 39-year-old joined Stephen Curry, Nikola Jokic, Victor Wembanyama, and Dennis Schroder.
LeBron James’s Illustrious Resume
Stephen Curry’s shots were lethal, to put it mildly. But LeBron James capped off an impressive run for the USA men’s basketball team with a 2024 Olympics MVP. James showed a consistent and versatile pattern of play on the basketball court. James’ efforts helped the USA to its fifth straight gold medal and 17th overall on Saturday. James’s illustrious resume shows that he has nothing left to prove, should he retire after his current contract expires in 2026.
