FFF Takes Clear Legal Action Over Argentina’s Racist Chants

FFF Takes Clear Legal Action Over Argentina's Racist Chants

The French Football Federation ( FFF ) has threatened to sue the Argentinian players for “racist and Discriminatory remarks.” These remarks were made in the post-match chanting slang about France after the Copa America final. However, the federation has stated their vehement protestation and is to launch an official complaint to the Argentinian Football Association, and FIFA. Meanwhile, steps have been taken following video footage shared on social media in which Argentina players were captured singing lewd lyrics about French players of black origin. However, such chants have spurred controversy as they are decidedly racist and discriminatory.

The French Football Federation Condemns Racism

The president of the FFF, Philippe Diallo, has further condemned the act. He pointed out that such statements are a violation of the principles of sport and human rights. The video, which went viral, following Argentina’s win in the Copa América, has prompted the FFF to take action in confronting racism and discrimination in football.

However, this isn’t the first time that such chants are being chanted at French players of African origin. Similar cases were highlighted before the World Cup final between France and Argentina two years ago. The measures taken by the FFF to institute a legal case reflect their fight against continuous acts of discrimination.

Argentinian footballer Enzo Fernández, one of many involved in the making of the video was later seen to have apologized. He stated that there was no excuse for such words, further acknowledging that the song contained highly offensive words. Also, he expressed regrets and apologized for being caught in the celebratory mood. He reiterated the fact that the video and the words in it are not a true representation of his character and beliefs. However, the FFF has not backed down despite apologies and is resolute on its legal course against the discriminatory remarks.

The FFF’s decision has received support from different quarters, such as France international Wesley Fofana, who’s a teammate of Enzo Fernández at Chelsea. However, It is critical to note that Fofana did not hesitate in expressing his disapproval of the incident. He labeled it as “uninhibited racism” while stressing that such actions are not welcomed in both football and society.

FFF Approach in Alliance With FIFA Zero-Tolerance on Racism

At the international level, FIFA has emphasized its approach to zero tolerance for racism. Moreover, FIFA president, Gianni Infantino in his fight against racism in football has relaunched a special task force to monitor and address issues of racism. Likewise, the FFF’s legal complaint corresponds to this zero-tolerance approach against racism and discrimination in sports.

However, the racial chanting incident depicts the challenges faced with combating racism in football to the present day. Notwithstanding, there has been visible progress in diversity and inclusion in sports, such as the UEFA Men’s European Football Championships. However, an incident like this is a reminder of the extent to which football, among other sports, still has a long way to go in emphasizing the idea of respect and acceptance.

In another reaction, a charity organization called Sporting Equals has also condemned the video that was posted on social media. The charity also praised Wesley Fofana for coming out publicly to speak against the incident. In addition, they clamor for more support in ensuring that such practices are condemned without hesitation.

Conclusion

Finally, the FFF’s action in filing a legal complaint against the racist chant made by Argentina players is a welcomed development in the fight against racism in football. However, this action coincides with activities by FIFA and the football community in addressing and eradicating racism incidents. Also, with emphasis underlining the responsibility that extends from organizations and brands to societies to safeguard and advance the values of diversity, tolerance, and fairness in football.
