Fatima Sana Named Captain for Pakistan Women's T20 World Cup 2024

The fast bowler Fatima Sana has been named captain of the 15-member team for the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This event will begin in the United Arab Emirates in October. Nida Dar, an all-around player, gives way to her. Fatima Sana, 22, will be captain of Pakistan for the first time in T20Is and at any other ICC event. Before this, she captained the country twice in One-Day Internationals (ODIs).

During one such match, she was substituted for the injured Dar and helped the team win a historic Super Over at Hagley Oval against New Zealand. From October 3 to October 20, the prestigious competition will be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The women’s national selection committee reached a unanimous decision.

Fatima Sana’s Leadership

There has just been one alteration from the Pakistani squad that traveled to Sri Lanka for the Women’s T20 Asia Cup last month, and that is the change in captaincy decided by the national selection committee. In replacing wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi is batter Sadaf Shamas, who competed in the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2023. The squad comprises 15 players, ten of whom are from the 2023 T20 World Cup assignment. Sadia Iqbal, Tuba Hassan, Shamas, Dar, Fatima Sana, Aliya Riaz, Muneeba Ali, Nashra Sandhu, Omaima Sohail, and Sidra Amin are among them.

Although Tasmia Rubab, an uncapped left-arm seamer, is also included in the squad. The inclusion of left-arm spinner Sadia is contingent upon her physical condition. Alvi, who was left out of the starting lineup, has also been picked by Pakistan as the traveling reserve. Umm-e-Hani and Rameen Shamim are the non-traveling reserves. Starting on October 3, the UAE will host the Women’s T20 World Cup. Together with Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, Pakistan is in Group A.

Since the competition was moved from Bangladesh last week, a revised schedule has not yet been released. Pakistan’s rising and domestic sides have been led by bowling all-rounder Fatima Sana, who has appeared in 40 T20Is and 41 ODIs. In a December 2023 Super Over in Christchurch, she also led Pakistan to a historic victory in an ODI against New Zealand.

Australia, India, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka are the other members of Group A along with Pakistan. The right-handed hitter Sadaf Shamas, who participated in the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, has also been called up by the selectors to replace wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi, who is scheduled to travel as a reserve player.

The 37-year-old Nida is having a hard time right now, and the team she captained lost both the T20I and ODI series in England before losing in the semifinals of the Women’s Asia Cup last month. Besides Fatima Sana, Nida has been kept in the team by the selectors. Nonetheless, at least ten players from the last edition of the international showcase are included.

The right-handed hitter Sadaf Shamas, who participated in the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, has also been called up by the selectors to replace wicketkeeper-batter Najiha Alvi, who is scheduled to travel as a reserve.  Wicketkeeper Najiha Alvi is the traveling reserve. Reserves who are not on the road: Umm-e-Hani and Rameen Shamim.
