Facundo Pellistri Joins Panathinaikos For €8M From Man United

Facundo Pellistri

Facundo Pellistri’s departure from Manchester United was confirmed on Wednesday. After completing a move to Greek side Panathinaikos in a deal worth up to €8m, the 22-year-old’s tenure at Old Trafford has come to an end. As reported by The Athletic, Erik Ten Hag’s team has a buy-back option that lasts for three years.

Facundo Pellistri has agreed to join Panathinaikos in a deal that could potentially sum up to €8 million. To secure his signing, the Greek club has paid Manchester United an initial €6m (£5.1m), along with an additional €2m (£1.7m) in performance-related bonuses. Also, United reached an agreement to include a substantial 45 percent sell-on fee for any future transfer from Panathinaikos. The deal also includes a buy-back option that spans three years.

United believes that Facundo Pellistri has the potential to further his development with the Athens-based club, following four disappointing years in Manchester. Since joining the United squad in 2020, the winger, who boasts 26 international caps for Uruguay, has faced challenges in becoming a regular starter.

Pellistri’s Time At Manchester United

Facundo Pellistri spent four years with Manchester United, however, he only started four games and made 25 total appearances. Notably, he played 81 minutes in a 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich during a Champions League trip at the Allianz Arena last season. The 22-year-old also made an appearance for United in the Community Shield two weeks ago. He was used as an unorthodox right-back and was the reason behind Manchester City’s late equalizer.

During his time at United, Facundo Pellistri has had three loan stays in Spain. He played for Deportivo Alaves twice and Granada once. Nevertheless, Pellistri’s progress has hit a roadblock, and a transfer to Panathinaikos would benefit the 22-year-old and Man United. He will have a reunion with his previous coach from the national team, who led the Uruguayan squad from 2021 to 2023. The attacker featured in all six matches for Uruguay during this summer’s Copa America, where Marcelo Bielsa’s team reached the semi-finals. Following a short stint at Granada in the latter part of the previous season, he appeared in 15 of the team’s last La Liga matches.

However, Pellistri is now set to embark on a new chapter in Greek football. There is a possibility that he might have to face Man United in the Europa League this season. Panathinaikos is scheduled to play against Lens in a two-legged qualifier later this month.

Everyone at the club would like to wish Facundo the very best of luck with his new club, and thank him for his efforts here,” United said via the website as the transfer was confirmed.
