Vikram Rathour, the former batting coach involved with the Indian team during the T20 World Cup, shared his insights on the future of Indian cricket in an interview with PTI. Rathour highlighted the challenges of replacing legends like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, emphasizing the need for a controlled and gradual transition.
He noted the depth of talent in Indian cricket but warned against rushing the process. As the team moves forward under the new leadership of Gautam Gambhir, strategic planning and careful execution will be crucial to maintaining the team’s success and cohesion.
The Challenge of Replacing Legend
The former batting coach had a lot to say regarding the transition. He stated:
We will never get players to the human equivalent of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli; maybe you give chances to some other players, but that’s it. He said that the just-off series with Zimbabwe gave a glimpse of India’s T20 team for the future but stressed that the switch in tests and one-day cricket will take time.
The series against Zimbabwe provided a bit of a preview of how the T20 team will be in the future, but as for tests and one-dayers, we still have to wait for two to three years for that.
Depth in Indian Cricket
Nonetheless, Vikram Rathour continues to see positives in Indian cricket, particularly the depth of talent.
I won’t get too bothered about it. We have lots of depth in Indian cricket. There are lots of very talented and skillful players coming through the pipeline.
He added that they should not overemphasize the transition and underline the need to manage the process, especially with the Indian team.
Vikram Rathours’ suggestion to Gautam Gambhir, who is set to take over the reins of the Indian team, is that the change must be gradual. Speaking on this issue, Vikram Rathour said:
The only thing that we have to ensure is that this transition is gradual because it has to happen. He was very clear about the point that this particular transition should be well planned out and should also be slow if it has to affect the Indian cricket team positively.
