Everton hoped to start the 2024-2025 Premier League season with a big three points, but instead fell behind early and couldn’t recover against a determined Brighton & Hove Albion side. After a first goal in the 25th minute, Everton couldn’t seem to bounce back and pull one back before halftime. And with a second-half red card, Everton were well and truly done before the final whistle even blew.
Everton vs. Brighton – Recap
Hurzeler, the new Brighton head coach, hopes his luck as the gaffer continues after a resounding three outs and three goals from his team this weekend. There was no better way to start off life as a new Premier League manager than to walk away with three points during a first-week away game, a tall order for any statute of manager.
But, with his side’s determination, attacking playing style, and aggressiveness, they were able to score an early first-half goal that saw them put Everton on the back foot. Yankuba Minteh, a new signing for Brighton, crossed the ball into the box at a dangerous angle and Mitoma was able to bury it in the back of the net past the Everton keeper.
Along with the first-half goal, Everton struggled with some poor playing performances from their starting eleven. Although Pickford was decent in goal, and Iroegbunam had a great game, poor games by Calvert-Lewin, Gueye, Young, and Doucore meant that Everton was playing lackluster. On the other hand, Brighton’s starting eleven featured great performances from Mitoma, Minteh, Welbeck, and Pedro to finish three chances on goal.
Looking at Everton, it seemed as if the new summer signing, Iroegbunam, was the most lively on the pitch. Whether it was first-game excitement or he is just a great player, we don’t know — but we know that Everton is lucky to have him. Other new signings, like Ndiaye and Lindstrom, were forced to take a place on the bench.
Everton vs Brighton Stats
Everton finished the game with just nine shots — and only one on target. They will age to work with their strikers, like Calvert-Lewin and Doucore, to get more shots on frame and have a more attacking style of play going forward. On the other hand, Brighton had ten shots and five on goal — three of which found the back of the net.
Everton earned just 38% possession, which is terrible for any team. Brighton had 62% possession and 575 passes, which showed in their dominance of the game. They also featured an 85% pass accuracy, compared to Everton’s 77%. Finally, the Merseyside club got a red card in the 66th minute which was the nail in the coffin for the Toffees. The year already chasing their tail throughout the game, and the send-off made it so much worse. Ashley Young got a red card for a bad tackle, leading to one more goal for Brighton in the 87th minute by Adingra.
