Evaluating Jordan Davis: The Eagles’ High-Stakes Decision

Jordan Davis of Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles asserted in the 2022 NFL Draft by selecting the 13th overall defensive tackle, Jordan Davis, to fortify the strength of the team’s defense for years. Time has passed, opinions about Davis are now mixed and even labeled him a “wasted pick,” according to former Eagles star Seth Joyner. Then, let us explore Davis’s journey so far, his potential, and whether or not the Eagles made the right choice in selecting him.

Jordan Davis: A Step Forward for Davis in 2023

Jordan Davis played in 13 games and started five times for his first year in the league. He could only total up to 18 tackles for the season, and based on most of the fans’ feedback, he should have done much more. Most people who watched him in action feel that he marked nothing, especially for the person who was drafted with much hype.

It was quite a season of accountability for Davis in the 2023 season, as he played all 17 games and even performed quite well. Davis concluded the season with 2.5 sacks and 45 total tackles, including two tackles for loss. This only led so many to believe that he would eventually become what the Eagles saw when they drafted him.

The world waits in totality for Davis as the Eagles go into the 2024 season. He has flashed glimpses of how good he can be, but surely he needs to prove himself to sit there of late on the field. This year is some sort of test for him, and so fans will love to see this guy turn things around.

Even with the improvement Davis has shown, not everyone has faith in him. One of his harshest critics is Seth Joyner, former linebacker for the Eagles. He thought Davis never proved he could be a pass-rusher. At this point in the 2024 season, according to him, Davis has produced only two tackles and only plays about half the snaps. Those numbers have turned into a barrage of criticism against him as a “wasted draft pick.

Expectations

A first-round draft by a team sets the bar considerably high in the pocket. Fans and analysts expect instant impact and produce phenomenal performances. Therefore, Davis’s slow start and lack of consistency will be subject to much scrutiny. For most people, he hasn’t yet lived up to the promise that comes with being a draft pick.

Jordan Davis gives the Eagles a chance to do just that. Leverage that ability, and by addressing his shortcomings, he can become a cornerstone for the team. The team and fanbase hold out hope he will come through as well and prove his draft status was justified at the end of the day.

That being said, it is still too early to judge whether Jordan Davis was a “wasted pick”. While people like Seth Joyner don’t believe in him, in reality, there is still so much potential in him. This season would be defining for him. If he could rise up to the challenge and become a significant contributor to the Eagles’ defense, he could stifle the critics. Fans can only hope that he makes his potential into performance on the field for now.
