Some main European teams have changed their manager or have not defined it for the next season. The end of the current season for some of the biggest teams in Europe is proving to be turbulent: while some are finalizing the managers’ names to occupy the bench, others still have nothing settled.
Some teams, like Liverpool, have already officially announced the arrival of Jürgen Klopp‘s replacement. For this reason, at Total Apex, we review the situation of the coaches at the main clubs in the major European leagues.
Major European Leagues Managerial Changes
England — Premier League
Liverpool
The Anfield team beat the rest and is one of the few teams that changed their coach, which has already made it official for Europe. After Klopp’s emotional farewell, the club had difficulty finding a replacement for a man who became an icon at Liverpool. In nine years, the German coach won a Premier League, an FA Cup, two English League Cups, a Community Shield, a Champions League, a European Super Cup, and a Club World Cup.
After a lengthy analysis and work, they chose Arne Slot as the replacement at Anfield. He managed Feyenoord for the last three seasons, where he was league champion last season. In the current one, he finished second, seven points behind PSV Eindhoven (91), and won the Dutch Cup. In Europe’s most important tournament, the Champions League, he finished third in the group stage and went on to the Europa League, where he was eliminated on penalties by Roma in the round of 32. In these three years, he was picked as the best coach in the Netherlands twice.
“We can announce that Arne Slot has reached an agreement to be the new coach. He will formally take his post on June 1, subject to a work permit,” the club announced on social media. Not only that, but Klopp himself started to chant his name in front of the entire stadium during his farewell.
Manchester United
The Red Devils will have to face a few days with difficult decisions ahead. It’s no secret that they have just had one of the worst campaigns in the club’s modern history, both in English and European football. A group stage elimination in the Champions League caused a stir, and eighth place in the Premier League table left them out of Europe for the next season.
While it was known that Erik ten Hag’s job at Manchester was a long process, the fans are starting to lose patience (he took over in mid-2022) as they do not see the results on the field.
In addition, the Dutchman had the opportunity to spend big and broke the market with signings like Antony and Mason Mount, who never managed to stand out with the Manchester United jersey at home or away while visiting fellow European teams in international matches.
Now, it is possible that the coach will leave the club, and in England, some names are already being considered possible replacements. One of the names that has been sounding strongest recently is Thomas Tuchel, who will leave Bayern Munich. However, the news that came out of Chelsea could change the destiny.
Another name that rings due to the popularity of the moment and the history he has with the club is Kieran McKenna. The man responsible for promoting Ipswich Town to the Premier is among the most sought-after. However, he has a particular history with United because he coached the club’s youth team and assisted some coaches, such as José Mourinho.
Chelsea
Finally, those from Stanford Bridge will be able to compete in Europe next season: after finishing in sixth place in the Premier, they will play in the group stage of the Conference League. However, this is not enough for the Blues’ board, who decided to fire Mauricio Pochettino from the club. The Argentine had taken over in mid-2023 and had a somewhat irregular first season, far from expectations.
Now, the club starts with the dance of names, and although there are many on the table, two are the main ones: Tuchel and Kieran McKenna, just like United. The first is inevitable: He appears as an option due to his history with Chelsea. After winning the Champions League in 2021, the club fired him in the middle of a situation that left the fans somewhat disturbed.
On the other hand, McKenna, just 38 years old, is one of the most popular names in Europe today. His attractive and enjoyable offensive style of play caught the attention of many boards worldwide and is to Todd Boehly’s liking. Chelsea’s economic power could convince him, despite his history with the Red Devils.
SPAIN — La Liga
Barcelona
After much back and forth, Xavi will finally leave his beloved Barcelona. After announcing mid-year that he was departing, he said he was staying just weeks ago. However, the Spanish press has let it be known that the 44-year-old coach’s days at the helm of the Blaugrana team seem to be numbered again.
The institution’s president, Joan Laporta, and the other board members are upset with his recent statements, in which he strongly criticized the club’s financial situation. Xavi is now free to go to any European club.
In Spain, they ensure that there are two main names to take the job if the Spaniard leaves the club. First, a well-known face of the house, Rafa Márquez. The 45-year-old Mexican, who already had a stint as a Barcelona player from 2003 to 2010 (he was Lionel Messi’s teammate), is now still at the club but in charge of Barcelona B.
On the other hand, there is Hansi Flick. The 59-year-old German coach appears on Barcelona’s radar as a possible replacement for Xavi and is to Laporta’s liking, who also believes that the former Bayern Munich and Germany coach could look favorably on a proposal, given that he is not currently coaching any team.
ITALY — Serie A
Juventus
Massimiliano Allegri’s departure from Juve is a fact: after winning the Coppa Italia, the club dismissed him due to his attitude during the final. Paolo Montero, former coach of San Lorenzo and historic player of the Vecchia Signora, is the interim coach until a replacement is found. But, like Liverpool, the name is more than known; it just lacks officialization.
According to Italian media, Thiago Motta will be on the Juventus bench next season. After a historic campaign with Bologna, the Italian caught the attention of all the big Europeans, but it seems he will stay in Serie A.
Milan
Despite achieving the runner-up in Serie A, Milan’s recent results could have been more favourable: they have won only one of their last eight matches. Stefano Pioli, after almost five years at the club and a Scudetto, will leave the club.
The main candidate to take over is Paulo Fonseca, who showed great interest in the Italian team’s project. The Lille coach, who took over in mid-2022, ends his contract in France in June, and Milan’s contractual ease in reaching the club is another advantage.
Napoli
The Italian team is eager to secure the renowned European and national manager, aiming to assemble a solid, competitive team to fight once again for the Serie A title. Antonio Conte, the Italian manager, has been jobless since parting ways with Tottenham in the latter half of the 2022-23 Premier League season.
“According to Rai Sport’s transfer specialist Ciro Venerato on Friday evening’s edition of TG Sport, Conte is now ‘ready’ to sign for Napoli, and Italian Rai outlets reported that Friday’s report detailed that Napoli has reached an agreement with Antonio Conte over a three-year deal”, said Onefootball.

Germany — Bundesliga
Bayern Munich
Finally, after one of the worst campaigns of the German team in recent times, the story between Thomas Tuchel and Bayern Munich has ended. Despite the love that the fans had for the coach, with the club they decided to go separate ways, and now they will have to find a new name to sit on the bench.
The reality is that lifting the Bundesliga trophy for Bayern has become a habit: they have won it 17 times this century. In addition, they have been consecutively crowned champions since 2013, but Xabi Alonso’s team came to break the streak.
Many names began to circulate for the coach’s position over time, as it had been known for a couple of months that he would leave. However, according to several European media, the only official contact the club had been with Vincent Kompany. The former Manchester City defender and current Burnley coach is to the liking of the German institution due to his vertical style of play, but so far, nothing has been defined.
