Who do you expect to win the Euro 2024 tournament? Will it be the ever-dangerous German team, or will Mbappe lead his France national team to another trophy? Maybe a lesser-known team, like Greece, can come in and win it all. Only time will tell how the national teams mesh with one another after long club seasons in their respective leagues.
Twenty four teams are heading to Germany this year to see who will be crowned the best of the best. The underdogs, like Albania, are looking to conquer and knock off the top dogs, like England, to cause a huge upset in the works.
Euro 2024 Power Rankings
First, let’s start at the bottom of the barrel. There is nothing against the lower-ranked teams, but sometimes it just means less funding in their domestic leagues, less experienced coaches, younger squad members, fewer facilities for training to prepare for matches, and complicated schedules that can lead to a lack of preparation time.
The bottom of the list involves Georgia, Albania, and Poland. Georgia is a new entry that won only two games in their Group A, but somehow managed to squeak their way into Euro 2024 by winning the Nations League with some surprising results. Zivzivadze scored two goals in a crucial game against Luxembourg to see them make it to the semi-finals, where Kvekveskiri made a key penalty shot to beat Greece that showed them to their first tournament ever as a country.
Next, Albania earned a much-needed point against neighboring Moldova last winter to reach the Championship finals for the second time ever as a country. Even after losing their first game to Poland, they somehow came back and scored enough points with wins against the Czech Republic to make their way out of the challenging Group E.
The last of the bottom teams in the Euro 2024 competition is Poland, led by the ever-famous Lewandowski who has scored thousands of goals for club and country over the years. Other key players, like Szczesny as the keeper and Zielinski in the midfield are imperative for Poland if they hope to do well in the Euro 2024 beginning matches.
At the top of the group, we have three teams that you (maybe) would expect – Belgium, Portugal, and France. Germany dropped down to the top five but didn’t break into the top three after a few surprising results from Belgium and Portugal that saw them leapfrog into the top three contenders at the Euro 2024 competition.
Belgium, led by DeBruyne, the Manchester City midfielder, did terribly in the 2022 World Cup. However, Lukaku, DeBruyne, and the new coach, Tedesco, are all gelling well together and showing how some team cohesion can lead to beautiful football. The Belgian squad is undefeated since the new manager joined and scored almost 15 goals in the qualifying competition.
Next, Portugal also acquired a new coach which brought a breath of fresh air to the ailing squad. Portugal won all ten matches in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, with Ronaldo still being at the top of his game by scoring the majority of his team’s goals. Even though he is ‘past his prime’, we know that Ronaldo, helped by Bruno Fernandes, will carry Portugal far in the Euro 2024 games.
Finally, France is the top-ranked team heading into the Euro 2024 tournament this summer. With Mbappe, the ultra-fast PSG winger, and Maignan, the brick wall and goalkeeper, France is looking extremely strong. They are currently the highest-ranked European team in the world.
