The ESPYs is one of the most exciting nights in the sports world, showcasing professional and elite athletes who deserve more recognition than maybe they have received in their past season. This is the time for international stars to gain the applause, recognition, and status they deserve for their hard work on and off the pitch.
Some of the biggest stars in entertainment, sports, and artistry all met in Los Angeles yesterday to discuss and celebrate the year’s best moments in the sporting world. Who do you think won? Keep reading to find out more.
ESPYs Winners
The best female athlete of the year was A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces. a’ja is the Center for the Las Vegas Aces and averaged almost 27 points per game during the regular season this past year, in addition to making 1.3 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. Having played 21 games in the regular season, she averaged 33.8 minutes per game and added almost three blocks per match to her amazing season.
The best breakthrough athlete was of the same sport — women’s basketball, and featured JuJu Watkins from the USC Women’s Basketball team. Juju is the USC Trojans guard and led the team as a freshman during her first year of college, playing in 34 games and averaging almost 35 minutes per game. She averaged more than 27 points per game this season, in addition to 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals to cap off an incredible rookie year.
The best record-breaking performance went to who else but Caitlin Clark after she won the NCAA’s All-Time leading Scoring Leader, breaking previously-held Maravich’s record.
The best comeback athlete was none other than Simone Biles, the American gymnast who is arguably the most talented athlete in the world in terms of power, strength, size, mass, speed, and athleticism. She took off two years from competitive gymnastics and only returned during the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastics where she won four gold medals and one silver medal in the competition.
The best college athlete for men’s sports was awarded to Jayden Daniels from LSU Football, the quarterback who went 236 for 327, earning a completion rate of more than 72%, throwing for more than 3,800 yards, and averaging 11.7 points per game.
The best college athlete for women’s sports went to Caitlin Calrk, the record-breaking baller who has caught the eyes and attention of everyone in, and out, of the basketball world.
The best players in their respective sports included Patrick Mahomes, Shohei Otani, Connor McDavid, Luka Doncic, A’ja Wilson, Max Verstappen, Sean O’Malley, Terence Crawford, Kylian Mbappe, Scottie Scheffler, and Coco Gauff.
Special ESPYs Awards: Soccer & Others
The ESPYs aren’t’ complete with some special awards that include perseverance, humanitarian honors, sportsmanship awards, leadership reconfiguration, the Muhammad Ali Sports Award, and the Pat Tillman Award for Service. The ESPYs honored players in college and professional athletes for not only their talent on the field but also their work off the field.
Some of the most exciting awards at the ESPYs included the Sports Philanthropist of the Year Honoree, the Billie Jean King Youth Leadership Award, the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, and the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.
One thing that was interesting about the ESPYS – Mbappe won for best footballer, even with the numerous women’s tournaments happening this year.
