ESPN’s Tim Legler Makes Bold Klay Thompson Statement

Klay Thompson may have tainted his Warriors' legacy

ESPN’s Tim Legler recently made an arguably bold Klay Thompson statement. Legler, 57, picked Thompson, 34, as the NBA player he’s most watching to have a comeback season in 2025.

Thompson spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Golden State Warriors. Thompson’s tenure in the Bay Area ended in the Summer of 2024, as the future Hall of Famer decided to join the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas during the offseason. Legler made a statement that has sparked conversation among NBA fans and media members alike. Read on for further details surrounding Legler’s statement.

Tim Legler’s Statement About Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson

ESPN’s Tim Legler recently made a bold statement about the Dallas Mavericks shooting guard Klay Thompson.

According to NBA Today via Sports Illustrated, Legler said, “I’m going with Klay Thompson…I think because of his relevance. He’s going to be on a team that can contend for a title. His impact on Dallas and the number of shots that he is going to get as opposed to the guys that were taking those same exact shots a year ago, you’re going to see a dramatic difference in Dallas with Klay Thompson.”

Legler’s statement is bold, but he might be right, as Thompson is a veteran NBA player to keep an eye on when it comes to the comeback season watch.

Klay Thompson’s Potential Production

Klay Thompson’s potential production with the Dallas Mavericks remains unclear, as the 2024-25 NBA regular season hasn’t started yet. Thompson’s still a productive NBA player, despite a slow and sluggish start early in the 2023-24 NBA season with the Golden State Warriors.

Thompson might not be a superstar and a Splash Brother anymore, but he averaged 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 43.2% from the field and 38.7% from the three-point line in 77 regular season games with the Warriors.

Klay Thompson’s Ability to Help

There’s a reason why many NBA fans are excited to see Klay Thompson play next to Dallas Mavericks superstars Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic this coming season. Thompson’s ability to shoot should simplify things for Irving, 32, and Doncic, 25; while helping him get more open looks than he’s used to.

Thompson has won four NBA championships and appeared in six NBA Finals as a member of the Warriors.  And, last season, the Mavericks advanced to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2011.

As one of the newest Mavericks, Thompson might advance to his seventh Finals and win his fifth NBA championship. But first, Thompson must increase his overall shooting consistency while staying healthy.
