ESPN recently predicted Luka Doncic as No. 1 in the 2025 MVP Race. Doncic, 25, is a Slovenian point guard who plays for the Dallas Mavericks. He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest European players of all time. His NBA career began six years ago when the Mavericks selected him with the third overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NBA Draft. But will the Mavericks star take home the MVP award in 2025? Keep reading to find out.
ESPN’s Prediction Of Luka Doncic In 2025
It’s safe to say if ESPN had a crystal ball to see the future, the same three NBA players — Luka Doncic, Nikola Jokic, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander would be in the running in the 2025 MVP race. ESPN recently published its forecast of the major awards in 2025, including MVP, Coach of the Year, and Rookie of the Year.
In ESPN’s MVP poll, Luka Doncic came out on top with 61 points, receiving 48% of first place votes, Jokic became runner-up with 40 points, receiving 10% of first-place votes, and Gilgeous-Alexander settled for third place with 37 points, receiving 24% of first place votes. Anthony Edwards and Giannis Antetokounmpo rounded out ESPN’s top five for 2025 MVP. Edwards and Antetokounmpo deserved to be a part of the MVP conversation.
Doncic’s Potential Momentum For 2025 MVP
Luka Doncic’s potential momentum is a possibility this time around, as the Dallas Mavericks made a deep playoff run to the 2024 NBA Finals. Typically, the NBA MVP is an annual award that takes time to build up, and Doncic checks off those boxes.
ESPN recently commented on its Doncic selection, “Superstars and basketball legends have claimed top-tier status by winning the NBA’s MVP award, and this season’s race is once again wide open. Mavericks guard Luka Doncic is at the top of our rankings after a commanding performance in the 2024 NBA Finals and will look to claim his first MVP award as he enters his seventh season in the league.”
ESPN’s recent comments were fair yet optimistic.
Doncic Settles For Third In MVP Race
Chances are, Luka Doncic is striving for a minimum of second place in the 2025 MVP race. Doncic settled for third place in the 2024 MVP race, while Gilgeous-Alexander became the runner-up and Jokic won his third MVP in four years.
Doncic’s third place finish in 2024 was disappointing, to say the least. Doncic had a great season with the Dallas Mavericks, as he averaged 33.9 points per game, 9.8 assists per game, and 9.2 rebounds per game. But voter fatigue could set in sometime for Jokic, as voters rarely select the same winner four times.
