The former skipper of the England cricket team, Eoin Morgan, has categorically denied any interest in replacing Matthew Mott as England’s white-ball coach. The rumors started doing rounds after England’s underwhelming show in recent global tournaments. This news is news to me, Morgan said. It is not nice when a coach comes under fire, and there is a lot of speculation about his future, but only time will tell what will happen.
Eoin Morgan Denying New Coach Proposal
Matthew Mott is in the middle of a four-year deal, which saw him win a T20 World Cup in his very first six months on the job, but recent performances make a case for his head coach’s leadership. His performance in the 50-over World Cup last year was a flop, as the team just won three of its nine matches at the event; two of them came when England were already out of the tournament. The recent T20 World Cup ended in disappointment too, as England made the semis but were thrashed off the field by India in Guyana.
Following the early exit from the T20 World Cup, England’s managing director is under siege and has been reviewing the performance of the team. He said that the review process was underway and that there were probably changes forthcoming. Mott was under serious threat; Key was sounding out names for a potential successor; and Eoin Morgan was one of those who had been mentioned. Eoin Morgan has consistently spoken in defense of both Mott and Jos Buttler for their respective roles.
Eoin Morgan has categorically denied any interest in taking up coaching at this point because of personal commitments. He addressed the questions while talking to the media and said:
I have had many questions from the media over the last couple of months about the position and whether I would take it on. My answer has simply been that the timing for everything in my life at the moment is not right. Yes, I want to coach down the line. I’m loving what I’m doing.
He has maintained his interest in his family and his job as a commentator. A career path that keeps him close enough to the game he loves without the hectic schedule of a coach.
Buttler’s Injury and The Hundred
Jos Buttler, the current captain of England, is unlikely to play in this year’s Hundred due to his calf injury. He underwent scans on Monday, and though not entirely ruled out, his Hundred team, Manchester Originals, will be preparing for the eventuality without him. If he does happen to be ruled out, it’s a big loss for our team. If he isn’t, we’ve got a history of giving young players an opportunity.
This is a very inopportune injury for Buttler and the team in that it raises again just how mercurial sports are and how constant the adjustments teams have to make are. There is still some uncertainty over the future of England’s white-ball coaching setup, but Morgan’s reiterated denial of interest and commitment to his other roles make this part, at least, clearer.
Eoin Morgan’s outright rubbishing of the coaching rumors has been a reflection of his priorities in life at the moment. With the emphasis on enjoying the new roles he is undertaking, how the change in leadership or even performance is structured in the team remains to be watched by fans and analysts alike in the months to come as the review process by England management continues.
