Enzo Maresca began his new season at Chelsea, as they hosted Man City in their opening Premier League game. The Blues had struggled throughout their preseason tour. Wherein their main losses came from Man City, Celtic, and Real Madrid.
Enzo Maresca entering a new season hoped his side would learn from their errors as they faced Man City. However, at Stamford Bridge, the Maresca’s side failed to hold their own against the League Champions. Chelsea ended up losing 2-0 to Man City, with goals coming from Haaland and Kovacic. At the End of the game, Maresca wasn’t displeased and was confident about the team. The Italian seemed hopeful for the games to come.
Chelsea vs Man City Recap
Chelsea fell to City at the Stamford Bridge losing 2 nil. However, the Blues were impressive in possession, asking all sorts of questions from the City’s defense. The Blues lacked a clinical edge throughout the game. Aside from ailing to finish up their chances, they also showed little ruthlessness when attacking the City’s half.
There were a couple of times were the Chelsea players found themselves at City’s 18-yard, but they hesitated in taking a shot. Moreover, Man City on the other took their opportunities by the throat which allowed them to score their two goals. Haaland had a deflected pass into his path. The Norwegian fought his way to beat Cucurella, and Fofana, which allowed him to slot a fine finish past the keeper Sanchez.
Kovacic also drifted near the box to fire a one-time shot narrowly beating Sanchez. This gave City the win.
Enzo Maresca’s Assessment
The Italian spoke about the flaws of the team saying.
“For me, the important thing is to create chances. We didn’t score but we created chances. The first goal for them was almost offside, we almost scored. These things change results but the performance was good overall. It was quite clear, you can see a team trying to keep the ball and dominate.
“We were against the champions today. We will continue and win games. They are a master in this kind of moment. We had two or three chances. They are a master of keeping hold of the ball. The performance was there and that is the main thing. You can see how they manage the ball.”

Maresca continued to speak on the positive side of his team’s performance despite the loss.
“I think the performance was good. The results, we don’t like to lose. But the performance was there. We competed against the best team in the world. We competed for large parts of the game at the same level and for some moments we were even better.
“We created chances. The big difference between us and them was inside of the box. And the way they managed the ball in the last part of the game; they are the master of that. But overall, I think the performance was quite good.”
“[We] were better than the last game against Inter. That is the most important thing for me; to improve game after game. It is very clear we are improving and going in the right direction. The direction is a good one. I don’t have any doubt that this team is getting better and we are going to have days where we win games and be very happy.”
