England vs Scotland World T20 – A Sad Washout

England vs Scotland World T20 – The First Washout of the Tournament

Well, it was bound to happen. The ICC World T20 had plain sailing as far as the weather was concerned until it wasn’t. Into the 6th game of the tournament between England Scotland and we have had our first washout. Having won the toss and elected to bat, at the 10 over mark the Scots were sitting pretty at 90 for no loss. When the showers returned.

This resulted in a ‘no result’. This meant that both teams were left to share the spoils, with 1 point each. The result is an interesting one. England whilst the stronger side would have fancied their chances had the game completed. Scotland on the other hand will argue against it with their strong start and the potential to post a big score.

The Scots are by no means minnows. Whilst not the strongest team on paper, the team packs some talent and ability. Scotland would have counted themselves unlucky to have missed out on qualification for last year’s ODI World Cup in India. That place going to the Netherlands.

This time, the Scots came in with a positive attitude, as the openers put their foot down scoring 49 by the end of the 6th over. Eventually going to a score of 90 by the 10th over. The washout is likely to be received with mixed feelings by the Scotland team. Could they have capitalized had the game played out fully? Or will they have undergone a late-game collapse, something not unexpected for relatively weaker teams in big competitions?

England – A Missed Point

Whilst there are several ways critics and analysts would read the final result, what is beyond dispute is that England, the current World T20 Champions, will be the more disappointed side. Whilst the opposition did get off to a good start, this is not new in T20 cricket. Especially in times when scores over 200+ are routinely chased down.

The loss of a point ought to be troubling for the England dressing room because the other major team in their group (Group B) is Australia. If England were to lose their game to the Aussies, and Australia managed to beat Scotland, then it would come down to how the Scots, who are relatively the strongest team after the English and the Australians in the group perform in their remaining games.

Rain, Rain Go Away

For cricket fans, this is not good news. Those looking to enjoy a good game of cricket, rain, and bad playing conditions could play spoilsport. Today’s game between India and Ireland is to be played in New York, and decent weather is expected. And fans and the rest better keep their fingers crossed.

Rained-out games where the points are shared between teams will no doubt benefit weaker opposition. As 1 point is better than no point. The way forward teams then is to stay focused on the games in hand and play to win.
