England’s national women’s football team, the Lionesses is on a winning streak as they have won their last four consecutive games. They recently beat Austria 7-2 in an international friendly game. Still, England were merciless on Italy yesterday as they thrashed them 5-1. Their recent results have restored their fans’ trust in them after failing to reach the Nations League finals and missing a slot in the upcoming Paris Olympic Games.
Instead, Sarina Wiegman’s side talked about making new beginnings which they started acting on last week against Spain. England are determined to retain the Nations League title in 2025. Wiegman is confident that her players will reclaim it. However, she admitted that they let England down in December despite having an amazing camp. The manager added that the team has a lot of energy now and players have bonded with those under 23.

Wiegman made a few changes to the squad that played against Austria. Grace Clinton, who scored her first goal for England last week was in the midfield. Wiegman added Lotte Wubben-Moy to the starting XI, hoping to perform well. She substituted Alex Greenwood with Wubben-Moy at half-time when they faced Austria. The team manager commended Wubben-Moy for her remarkable performance at Arsenal and stated that is a major reason why she included her in the lineup.
Lotte Wubben-Moy Scores for England
Wubben-Moy netted England’s first goal against Italy in the first minute. She dedicated the goal to Izzy, a deaf Lionesses supporter. Yet, Wubben-Moy hadn’t been in England’s starting XI since June 2022. Instead, Wiegman selected Maya Le Tissier, Jess Carter, Esme Morgan, Greenwood, and Millie Bright whenever they were available.

Lauren Hemp scored twice, in the 21st and 34th minutes boosting the Lionesess’ lead. They continued attacking Italy’s defense aggressively hoping to score another goal before the break. Unfortunately, Michela Cambiaghi got a perfect scoring opportunity in the 45+3 minute after England’s defense lapsed briefly. Sofia Cantore got the ball and passed it to Michela Catena, who made a cross to Cambiaghi.
The latter utilized the chance and scored Italy’s first goal. Wiegman sent Rachel Daly and Ella Toone to the pitch in the second half to replace Chloe Kelly and Georgia Stanway. Toone scored a goal in the 69th minute and Daly netted in the Lionesses’ fifth goal in the 79th minute. Laura Giuliani denied the Lionesses another scoring chance and the match ended 5-1.
Wiegman’s Remarks After the Game
Wiegman informed ITV that she had a chance to engage many players except Fran Kirby. She stated that players like Wubben-Moy are developing fast and certain positions have high competition. Wiegman focused on set pieces and believes that her players will maintain their current form.
