Breaking: Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid Out For 2-3 Weeks

Connor McDavid made history last night.

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that captain and superstar Connor McDavid will miss up to three weeks with an ankle injury he suffered in Monday night’s loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. McDavid flew back to Edmonton on Tuesday while the Oilers marched on with their road trip which continues in Nashville on Thursday.

Edmonton Oilers Lose More Than Monday’s Game

Connor McDavid injured his ankle on his opening shift on Monday during a puck battle with Blue Jackets‘ Zach Werenski. Werenski appeared to trip McDavid, who stumbled into the boards. McDavid skated to the bench on his own but did not return. The Edmonton Oilers ended up losing the game 6-1, bringing their record to 4-5-1. McDavid has three goals and ten points in what is another slow start to the season for the Edmonton Oilers. Much like his team, and despite his point total, McDavid has yet to find his game.

The Oilers started 2-9-1 last season, before righting the ship and finishing the season one win away from taking home the Stanley Cup. As successful as last year was, bouncing back from a bad start two years in a row is a lot to ask. Although losing McDavid for almost a month is never a good thing, the Oilers dodged a major bullet with today’s news. Now that McDavid’s immediate fate is known, it’s next man up for the Edmonton Oilers. Through ten games, Draisaitl and McDavid lead the team with 10 points. Ekholm is next with eight.

After that, there’s been a serious lack of production from players who the Oilers desperately need to step up. It starts with Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins. After scoring 70 goals in the regular season and playoffs last year, Hyman has only one point. Nugent-Hopkins and free-agent addition Jeff Skinner have combined for only three goals and eight points. The Oilers have a difficult five-game stretch coming up, including matchups against the Golden Knights and the Canucks. These players are going to need to give more in McDavid’s absence.
