Eagles Sign S Caden Sterns, OLB David Anenih to Practice Squad

More changes will also be witnessed on the team’s practice squad this week by the Philadelphia Eagles, who just signed safety Caden Sterns and outside linebacker David Anenih to inject strength into their roster after the start of the season fully kicks in. To facilitate the signings, the team had to let go of tight end Kevin Foelsch to make room for them. Let’s break it down for you, in case these moves meant anything for the Eagles and how they might impact their success.

Bringing Back Caden Sterns

Caden Sterns is coming back to the Eagles after a bit of a rollercoaster ride. Signed in August, his preseason looked very promising. However, he was released and then signed back to the practice squad. Sterns does have some experience with the NFL, having played 20 games for the Denver Broncos. He accumulated 49 tackles and had four interceptions. This is bound to be a first-rate learning experience for the Eagles as they try to strengthen their secondary.

Sterns has had a tough injury history—a torn patellar tendon, to name one—that kept him out of part of last season. But he’s been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list in July, so it’s pretty clear that he’s ready to contribute. Getting to know what he learned from erstwhile Eagles Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio in Denver, Sterns can make rather fast adjustments to Eagles defensive schemes.

The Eagles signed David Anenih, who will bring some fresh eyes to the team. Anenih arrived in the league as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and wandered through a few teams, including the Titans and Dolphins. Thus far, he’s yet to experience regular-season action, but at the College level, his stats look pretty impressive. At the University of Houston, he was an All-American Conference First Teamer with 99 tackles and 20.5 sacks in his collegiate career.

His role as an outside linebacker offers much-needed depth to the Eagles’ defense. Anenih will be getting the experience of learning from veterans in a very supportive environment and thus would further develop his skills. As such, the Eagles believe he will make it as he gains experience.

Building a Culture of Athlete Success

These roster changes aren’t about filling in spots; they are about changing the culture of a winning team. Eagles need hungry players who want to prove themselves. Stern has shown much more determination by trying to get back to his game after a few injuries and Anenih wants to stamp himself in the league. In both, there is much to prove, and competition inside the locker room can brew interesting things.

The NFL is the sport’s most competitive league, and depth builds whether a team will win or lose. The more players, the more versatile, and in case of injury, one of them can take over the gap. Strengthening the team by the management of the Eagles is on the right course.

The Philadelphia Eagles improved their roster with two signings: safety Caden Sterns and outside linebacker David Anenih to their practice squad. Add much-needed depth and experience to the roster, especially without A.J. Brown for a couple of weeks, as these acquisitions may have gone to bolster the Eagles’ pool.

The cutting of Kevin Foelsch also shows that if the Eagles are at the point where they need to look elsewhere for answers with their team, then that is exactly what they should do—to secure individuals who fit into their immediate needs. These newcomers may turn out to be the difference between winning and losing for the Eagles as the season plays out. The Eagles combine talent with determination to place themselves strongly for their next games.
