The Eagles of Philadelphia outsmarted their regular season host, the New Orleans Saints, in an electrifying contest. Defensive performances by the team are outstanding in particular by former Saints C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Zack Baun for Philadelphia to contain such a potent offense by the New Orleans Saints. Let’s discuss the incident that happened, how the Eagles won, and identify some of the prolific performances by the players involved.
Gardner-Johnson’s Revenge
The defense caught fire right from word go. The game plan of the Saints was completely beautiful. New Orleans had been scoring so easily in previous weeks, but they found it so hard moving the ball against the Eagles. The Eagles allowed only 219 total yards. That was a big achievement for a depleting defense that has been serving posters of former glory elsewhere throughout the season.
Linebacker Zack Baun was an ace, posting a game-high 13 tackles. This was his second double-digit tackle game this season, showing how much he means to the Eagles’ defense. “We did our job,” Baun summed up the great effort the team played with. He made things easy for himself by reading plays so well and reacting quickly.
Another former Saint contributing here was C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who played quite a big role in the play. With eight tackles and nearly intercepting a pass, he showed that he was a player to beat on the field. For Gardner-Johnson, perhaps no game meant more than this one, in which he played on offense and defense and contributed significantly to each side’s victory. He did little to conceal his desire to prove a point against his former team. This kind of determination and tenacity is exactly what energized the Eagles’ defense during that game.
A Dominant Run Defense
Initially, the Eagles had been bothered by run defense issues, but they were solid against the Saints. New Orleans managed only 89 rushing yards. That’s a far cry from what things were earlier in the season. At the time of this game, they ranked 25th in run defense. And shutting down the run forced the Saints to concentrate their attack more heavily on the passing game.
Perhaps the turning point in the game was when Baun made a pivotal stop on fourth-and-one. He was able to tackle Alvin Kamara, negating that attempt at conversion by the Saints and giving the Eagles the ball back in the deal. That was certainly one of the most physical and aggressive plays for Baun, perhaps in the year. If what the Eagles’ defense needed was for big plays to sort of compound momentum throughout the game, then it succeeded.
Struggles for the Saints
On the other side of the ball, the Saints offense could not manage to enjoy any sort of rhythm. Quarterback Derek Carr had only 142 yards passing, well below his norm. The Eagles disrupted what had been the timing, or rhythm, of the Saints’ plays and put them into very uncomfortable situations. Saints, who had averaged over 400 yards in their first two games, had only 219 yards this time.
The Eagles’ defense came in fierce and coordinated. Gardner-Johnson noted that they labored very hard. Such good practice and strategy paid back to them. They trusted each other so much, believing that at one point, their teammates would do the plays.
The defense stole the show, but the offense of the Eagles did enough to ensure the win. The team scored when it mattered most and, towards the end, a late touchdown sealed the game’s fate. There is a need for balance between the offense and defense of this team if they are going to capitalize on what they have started.
Looking Forward
This win puts the Eagles at a 2-1 record, and going forward will give them much-needed confidence. They thus proved their ability to switch and deliver under pressure-very important for the long season that is ahead of them. Their next opponents are the Buccaneers and they will have to carry such defensive intensity into that game.
The Eagles beating the Saints 15-12 proved the significance of a strong defense, and the appearance of former Saints C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Zack Baun paid off in the efforts of the team to smother an explosive offense that the team was unwilling to exploit this season. If they do so, then the Eagles can be sure of getting what they need and want as they move forward to a successful season with a good defense complemented by a reliable offense.
