San Diego Padres Starting Pitcher Dylan Cease had a historic performance this afternoon in the “Nation’s Capital.” He tossed a no-hitter against the Washington Nationals earlier today. He struck out nine while walking three during his historic outing. The offense of the San Diego Padres did just enough as they defeated the Washington Nationals 3-0. A three-run single by Ha-Seong Kim in the top of the first inning was all the help Cease needed as he started his march toward history.
Cease is not the first Padres player to accomplish this feat. Joe Musgrove tossed the first no-hitter in San Diego Padres history on August 27, 2021, against the Los Angeles Angels. This is the second no-hitter in Major League Baseball this season as Houston Astros tossed one on April 1 against the Toronto Blue Jays. Joe Musgrove is 10-8 this season with an ERA of 3.50. He is leading the league in strikeouts. How will Dylan Cease fare in his next start?

Cease made his MLB debut in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox. He spent the first five seasons of his career in the “Windy City” before being dealt to the San Diego Padres in March of 2024. The best year in the career of Dylan Cease came in 2022 when he finished second in the American League Cy Young voting. He lost out to Justin Verlander of the Houston Astros for the prestigious award that season. Cease has a career record of 53-43 with an ERA of 3.78.
When Will Cease Take The Mound Next?
The next scheduled start for Dylan Cease is on July 31 at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He last faced Los Angeles on June 15, 2023, and fared well. He surrendered two earned runs over 5.2 innings of work. Cease will be chasing another bit of history in his next start as he is looking to throw back-to-back hitters for the first time since 1938. Johnny Vander Meer accomplished this feat nearly nine decades ago.
Regardless of how Dylan Cease fares in his next start, the eyes of the baseball world will turn to him as he looks to follow up on an all-time great afternoon in Washington, D.C. This could be the springboard the San Diego Padres need to make their playoff push.
