Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler continue huge controversy

Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier has fought vigorously in previous days which has led to them both exchanging some words before and after fighting. We can say that they both don’t like each other and show their high striking skills in the octagon. The Diamond didn’t hold back when responding to former opponent Michael Chandler in their ongoing verbal spat.

The latest exchange began when Chandler claimed he was living rent-free in Poirier’s head after Poirier mentioned him during an interview on The MMA Hour. In the interview, Poirier ridiculed Chandler for acting like an experienced UFC veteran despite having only five fights in the organization.

Michael Chandler’s reply to Dustin Poirier

Michael Chandler did reply to his opponent and, as expected, didn’t use words that would calm the situation. Chandler fired back by saying, “Dues paid, but I’m living rent-free.”

Obviously, when Chandler said this, Dustin had to defend himself and make Chandler feel like he was a scared kid in front of him in the octagon. The Diamond mentioned his dominance in the 2022 fight that he won against Chandler by a great submission. When asked for his response, Dustin Poirier was brief and clear, leaving no ambiguity about his feelings towards the fighter he defeated by submission at UFC 281 in 2022.

“Man, f*ck Michael Chandler,” Poirier told MMA Fighting on Thursday. “Check your record, buddy. That last ‘L’ two years ago is to the kid right here. We’ll see,” Dustin Poirier said about his future. I think I’m going to fight again.”

 Chances to win

There are high chances for Dustin Poirier to win against his former opponent, Chandler. They have always had some controversial exchange of words before the fight. Chandler hasn’t competed since his loss to the Diamond, as he’s been waiting for a match against Conor McGregor ever since they were named coaches on The Ultimate Fighter in March 2023.

On the other hand, The Diamond had been competing against great champions, which would lead to higher chances for Poirier to win against his opponent if they fought. Poirier has been fighting champions like Islam, which has increased his expertise in grappling and striking. Although he lost against Makhachev, he learned a lot from this fight.

Unfortunately for Chandler, the fight has yet to happen. McGregor had to recover from a broken leg from his 2021 loss to Dustin Poirier and then comply with a six-month waiting period after re-entering the UFC’s anti-doping program.

 UFC 303 Potential

Chandler was excited to fight McGregor and wanted to show his dominance, but it was not possible for certain reasons. The fight was set for UFC 303 in June, but McGregor had to withdraw due to a broken toe. Chandler has a lot of chances to fight other guys, but he will be waiting for McGregor to recover so that they can continue what they started.

Normally, when fighters have their fights delayed, they look for other fights, but here it doesn’t seem like Chandler is looking out for other fighters; rather, he would wait for McGregor to recover, return, and settle the matter through a fight.

Although Chandler is in a state of uncertainty, he is still waiting for a new date to be set for his fight with McGregor. Someday. It is uncertain, but Michael might look for a rematch with Dustin Poirier, especially since the Louisiana native has suggested he might keep fighting despite contemplating retirement after his defeat by lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 302.
