As the FA Cup fight continues to get stiff, Mauricio Pochettino’s side was fortunate to survive a fightback from the 10-man team of Leicester City. The dramatic match saw the Blues home fans threaten manager Mauricio Pochettino that they would turn on him. Luckily, Chelsea scored twice in the stoppage to survive Leicester’s major scare, making the match end 4-2.
Chelsea vs Leicester: Recap
Carney Chukwuemeka and Noni Mudueka snatched victory, moving the Blues to the next level. Before then, the hosts were comfortably leading 2-0 until Axel Disasi scored an own goal from 35 yards. The score made the game breathe some life as it moved into the 51st minute. As If that was not enough, Stephy Mivididi curled in a beautiful equalizer. Eleven minutes later, the wounded Stamford Bridge made its unrest clear by voicing chants of “You don’t know what you are doing.”
To save Chelsea from the embarrassment of getting into extra time, Chukwuemeka netted a goal in the closing minutes. At least that calmed down the tense atmosphere at the Bridge. But still, the fans were on Pochetinno’s neck. Noni came in with a 4th goal to save the day and Pochetinos from the fans, who were still booing all over.
Why Did Leicester End up as a 10-man Team?
Apart from the four goals, the Leicester side was affected more by the red card given to its defender Callum Dayle just 17 minutes before the end of the game. He would have survived with a yellow card had he not received a yellow card initially. This time, he fouled Nicolas Jackson. The video referee ruled the foul was outside the box but upgraded his yellow card to red.
Sunday was one of many times the Blues had an exciting win. In the last eight years, Chelsea have moved to the last four for the sixth time in the FA Cup competition.
The triumphant afternoon wasn’t so much expected by many since Pochetinno’s team had been inconsistent. However, things changed the moment the team blew a 2-0 lead given to them by Marc Cucurella and Cole Palmer in the first half, making the atmosphere different. Although, between the strikes, Raheem Sterling missed a penalty.
