Dortmund Seals the Deal in Final 15 Against Club Brugge

Dortmund Seals the Deal in Final 15 Against Club Brugge

On Thursday, Club Brugge and Borussia Dortmund shared a familiar scoreline. The Bundesliga side finished 3-0, as they did in each of the previous encounters between the two teams. However, Club Brugge performed admirably for 75 minutes. The home side got many golden chances but their inefficiency cost them, as it always does at the greatest level.

Despite having just 37% possession of the ball, which is unusual for the club domestically, they managed to unleash 18 shots on Dortmund’s goal. One more than their opponents, Hugo Vetlesen should have given them the lead in the first half when he struck the crossbar. And the rest of the team had other opportunities that they failed to capitalize on. At the top level of European football, this may be expensive.

Gittens’ Impact & Dortmund’s Offensive Strength

Super sub-Jamie Gittens, who came off the bench and scored twice in 22 minutes to seal the victory, was much appreciated by Dortmund. In the last minute, Brandon Mechele gifted Dortmund a penalty to make it 3-0. Nicky Hayden can undoubtedly draw confidence from his performance.

The team did not appear intimidated by their opponents, and when they did need the ball, they knew exactly what they wanted to do to damage the Bundesliga side. If the club intends to continue its campaign in the new Champions League, it must replicate this level of performance. Gittens joined the game in the 68th minute and soon altered the outcome. His first goal came eight minutes later, after two deflections.

At 20 years old, Gittens became one of the youngest players to score twice as a substitute in a Champions League encounter, behind only David Trezeguet. After cutting inside and firing past Simon Mignolet with skill, he scored his second goal four minutes later. His skills were on display, and Dortmund’s victory benefited greatly from this effort.

Dortmund maintained their record against Brugge by playing with a solid defense the entire time. They made Champions League history by being the first to go five games without conceding a goal. Their victory depended heavily on their ability to defend. Guirassy, who signed up for Dortmund after scoring 28 goals in 28 league games for Stuttgart the previous season, was arrested in the area in question. He scored the game’s last kick to convert the penalty.

Guirassy extended Dortmund’s advantage by netting a penalty late in stoppage time after being fouled by Brandon Mechele. With the clean sheet against Brugge, Dortmund became the first Champions League club to meet a team five times and not concede a goal. The former Manchester City winger’s second goal displayed his skill as he dribbled down the left and cut in to score with a low shot, while his first goal resulted from a wonderful deflection.

Dortmund had missed the previous opportunity to convert a Champions League penalty against Barcelona in 2019, therefore this was their sixth straight successful attempt. This win gives Dortmund’s Champions League campaign a positive start. As the tournament continues, their ability to convert chances while maintaining a strong defensive position will be crucial.
