Borussia Dortmund’s first and only Champions League trophy in 1997. They also finished runners-up in 2013 after a 2-1 loss to German rivals, Bayern Munich in Wembley Stadium, London. 11 years later, they’re back in their third-ever final, but this time, it’s against Spanish champions and 14 times Champions League winners, Real Madrid.
Both teams have a rich rivalry in the competition. Dortmund and Real Madrid clashed for the first time on the 1st of April 1998. Real Madrid overcame the German side 2-0 that day with goals from Fernando Morientes and Christian Karembeu. Real Madrid eventually won that year’s edition of the tournament against Juventus in the final with a lone goal by Predrag Mijatovi.
Dortmund Vs Real Madrid Head-to-Head
In 14 matches between Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid, the Spanish side has overcome the German side six times, with five of those ending in draws. The rivalry between these European giants has produced 43 goals, with the German side scoring 19 of them.
Marco Reus, who incidentally is playing his last match for Dortmund in the Champions League final tonight, is the club’s highest goal scorer in the Champions League with 24 goals. That’s 81 goals less than Real Madrid’s highest goal scorer in the Champions League, Cristiano Ronaldo, who’s scored 105 Champions League goals for Real Madrid.
Under Jürgen Klopp, Dortmund clashed with Madrid in the 2012-13 quarterfinals, defeating the Spanish side 4-1 in Germany. It was enough to earn them passage to the semifinals despite losing 2-0 to Spain. They met again in the next season, but this time, a 2-0 home win wasn’t enough to overturn Madrid’s 3-0 first-leg deficit.
Both sides met again in the 2016-17 season group stage, with both games ending in 2-2 draws. They met again in the 2017-18 season’s group stage. Madrid won both matches 3-1 and 3-2. Madrid has won the title each year they’ve met with Dortmund except the 2002-03, and 2012-13 seasons. That’s four out of six seasons.
