Dortmund Set To Extend Manager’s Contract 3 Years After Excellent Champions League Season

Dortmund raised eyebrows around the soccer world after they had a fantastic Bundesliga season and made it to the coveted Champions League final against the Spanish La Liga giants, Real Madrid. Many thought that Borussia Dortmund wouldn’t have as good of a season as in past years, as Bayern Munich seemed to be the front runners with Thomas Tuchel at the helm and stars like Harry Kane on their squad list.

But, Dortmund proved everyone wrong and had a great season in the domestic league and in international competition. Does this mean that they want to keep on their gaffer for next season? It seems as though the club has put out feelers so see if the manager would be interested in staying another year. The real question is if the passionate and energetic coach will decide to stay with his current club.

Will the Dortmund Manager Stay Another Year in Charge?

According to Fabrizio Romano, a renowned journalist in the footballing world, Dortmund is looking to extend the current manager’s contract so he can stay at least one more year with the German club. Despite losing in the UEFA Champion League Final on June 1st, they are still pleased with making it to the final leg of the competition and his performance in the Bundesliga for the 2023-2024 season.

The coach has noted the change the team has gone through in the second half of the year, scoring goals, increasing their energy, listening to tactical directions, and thwarting teams who were apparently ‘much better’ than them on paper.

But, the new manager might be without one of his key players if he does decide to come back. Reus, who announced his departure from Dortmund before the CL final, has an offer from one of the United States’ clubs, the Los Angeles Galaxy playing in the MLS. Many older players go to the MLS to wind down their careers and make a hefty salary before they hang up their boots for certain.

So, if the current manager stays, he will be without the captain and one of the leaders on his team. Terzic, the current man in charge at Dortmund, began coaching at the current club in May of 2022 after the previous manager resigned from his position in charge. He has a 3-year contract, but the club is looking to extend his contract after his positive results in the German Cup, Bundesliga domestic league, and Champions League competition.

Borussia Dortmund Looking Forward

Currently, Dortmund have numerous high-level players on their squad who will stay at least one more year with the club. Sebastian Haller is a forward who conquered cancer and returned to the field to score goals and provide key assists for his club. Fullkrug is a dependable striker who can come on and make things happen in the final third.

Hummels is a stalwart defender who knows the game and can help command his team. Julian Brandt is an engine in the midfield who can dictate passes and keep his team organized. Emre Can is a well-known midfielder who captains his team and helps organize the back line while defending. Other players, like Giovanni Reyna and Coulibaly, are out on loan and could return to Dortmund during the 2024-2025 season.
