Miami Dolphins Extend Tua Tagovailoa On Lucrative 4-Year Deal

Miami Dolphins Star retires.

The Miami Dolphins secured their signal caller with the extension of franchise Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who they drafted in the top five of the 2020 NFL Draft. After a few seasons of overcoming multiple injuries, 2023 was a breakout season with him staying relatively healthy and playing in 17 games. He showcased what he could do with the weapons around him, as 2024 could be a further step forward now that he is paid.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa gets a four-year extension worth $212.4 million with $167 million guaranteed. The former fifth overall pick is now the fourth highest-paid quarterback, earning $53.1 million in average salary that lasts until 2028. The 26-year-old will get a little more than what Jared Goff of the Detroit Lions got earlier this offseason, along with Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

In Miami, Tagovailoa now holds the richest contract in their franchise history. This is in comparison to the legend Dan Marino, who made $51 million in career earnings. The Alabama quarterback earned his first Pro Bowl nod after a 2023 season where he led the league in passing yards with 4,624 yards through the air. In 2022, Tagovailoa was the leader in passer rating and is entering his fifth season in 2024. In both seasons, he surpassed 25 passing touchdowns and led Miami to the wild card.

Can the Team Get Over the Hump in the Playoffs for 2024?

With all this speed, can the Dolphins overcome their cold weather deficiencies in the playoffs? Time will tell but on paper, at least with Jaylen Waddle re-signed, their main core of him and Tyreek Hill will be their featured weapons once again. Miami also brought in veteran Odell Beckham Jr. to be their third option at wide receiver, a spot they struggled to find consistency in last year. Former sixth-round pick Malik Washington will compete as a backup and could push for a starting role down the road.

Their main addition on the offensive line was Center Aaron Brewer from free agency and Patrick Paul from the 2024 NFL Draft. At tight end, free agent Jonnu Smith from the Atlanta Falcons is replacing Mike Gesicki from the last few seasons. Miami drafted Jaylen Wright to add even more speed to their running back duo of veteran Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane, who were explosive as a tandem. With Head Coach Mike McDaniel and his innovative play calling, the Dolphins offense should be a top unit yet again.

Is Dak Prescott Next After Jordon Love’s Deal?

The big question from this Tagovailoa contract with the Dolphins is what implications it has for Dak Prescott. He is the last remaining starting quarterback looking for a new extension before the 2024 season. But for the Dallas Cowboys, they will have to extend multiple young stars before getting to the 30-year-old who has dealt with serious past injuries. Prescott could walk at the end of the 2024 season as a free agent, with inevitable deals coming to CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons sometime soon.

Tagovailoa’s new deal comes before Jordan Love‘s extension, as he signs a new four-year contract worth $220 million and surpasses the Miami quarterback. For Green Bay, they gave the 25-year-old top-tier money, who is now tied with Joe Burrow from the Cincinnati Bengals and Trevor Lawrence from the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Packers quarterback does beat their contracts by getting a record-setting $75 million signing bonus and ties their average salary at $55 million.
