Dolphins Mike McDaniel Reveals Hot Hand Approach To Run Game

The Dolphins running back room was a powerhouse in 2023, helping propel them as one of the most dominant offenses throughout the season. Sporting a 1,000 and 800-yard rusher, the ground game is where the offense’s attack was built. After drafting Jaylen Wright in the fourth round of the 2024 draft, many people questioned who would get the bulk of Miami’s rushing snaps in 2024.

According to head coach Mike McDaniel, the answer to that question is all the above.

When asked about which one of the Dolphins’ backs would get the most burn, McDaniel subtly deflected the idea.

Just trying to get individuals opportunities, and let those opportunities shape their overall breadth of how many touches they get in the course of a game,” McDaniel said of their usage, via The Coachspeak Index. Just to get everybody involved is important for me, and then letting the game take its course on whose competitive edge we’re gonna lean on the most.

It doesn’t take long in a take to give a guy a couple carries here, and then the next guy gets a couple carries, McDaniel said. You feel like, OK, this dude, it’s one of his days. We better lean on this guy and give him more.

Raheem Mostert turned 32 in 2024, coming off of his career high in carries (209) in 23′. In previous seasons, the 2015 UDFA struggled to play consistently due to injury. With the Dolphins, however, he has managed to stay on the field despite his rising age. As the Dolphins prepare for a potential deep 2024-25 playoff run, they know keeping his legs fresh will be key to grinding out tough games.

Dolphins Dynamic Backfield Outlook

In 2023-24, the Dolphins ran with the dynamic duo of veteran Raheem Mostert and rookie De’Von Achane. Mostert received the most attempts on the squad, taking 209 rushes for 1,012 and a team-leading 18 touchdowns. Achane fought through injuries resulting in 800 yards, sporting an impressive average of 7.8 yards per carry.

In 2023, the Miami Dolphins boasted one of the most effective rushing attacks in the NFL. Although they ranked only 15th in total rushing attempts, they managed to finish with the sixth-highest rushing yardage. The Dolphins topped the league in key categories, including yards per carry (5.1) and rushing touchdowns (27). They also led in expected points added per rush, based on data from Tru Media.

With the speedy addition of Tennesee’s Jaylen Wright, there will be no reason to overload the injury-prone starters. With the hot-handed committee approach mentioned by Coach McDaniel, the Dolphins athletes will have less stress to worry about.
