Dolphins Injury Report Leaves Questions Heading Into Week 2

The Miami Dolphins’ 2023 season was plagued by injuries. Subsequently, the offseason was spent healing the star-studded depth chart. In their week one matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the team managed to field many key players and appeared to keep them healthy. In their Tuesday injury report before their Thursday night bout, however, it looks like the roster is still going through their injury woes.

The Miami Dolphins’ injury report remained unchanged from Monday to Tuesday, with running backs Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane both marked as non-participants. The injury report is an estimate of what participation might have been during a regular practice. Despite this, the outlook for Mostert and Achane playing on Thursday against the Buffalo Bills seems uncertain.

It is important to acknowledge that the injury report is more of an estimation, as the Dolphins participated in only walkthroughs due to the short week. Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane fell under the ‘Did Not Participate’ designation with ankle and chest injuries respectively. Expectedly, star corner Jalen Ramsey and rising star pass rusher Jaelen Phillips were listed as limited as they nurse their ongoing injuries. Offensive lineman Liam Eichenburg also landed on the limited list after his impressive game against the Jaguars.

Dolphins Banged Up Running Back Room

The Dolphins running back room will be matched up against a strong Buffalo Bills defensive line in their Thursday night primetime matchup. Unfortunately for South Beach, the running back room will likely have to be relegated to the backups coming off of a short week. Mostert and Achane combined for 1,812 yards in 2023, the most of any tandem in the 23′ regular season.

De’Von Achane was drafted in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft, highly regarded for his blazing speed. The young back put on impressive displays in 23′, although he missed six games due to injury. Mostert, 32, has found a late stride under Mike McDaniel’s scheme, unfortunately, injuries have come back to plague Mostert’s output.

Against the Bills, Mostert blew up for 136 yards in a 2022 matchup, though just nine yards in 2023. In the nine-yard performance by Mostert, Achane found 101 yards in only eight carries. Now with both speedster backs likely missing or limited in their week 2 game, the Dolphins will learn to lean on new players.

Final Thoughts

Backup running back Jeff Wilson Jr will be the feature back for the Miami Dolphins if their number one and two fail to recover before Thursday. Although he does not jump off the stat sheet, Wilson has a proven track record of solid RB work in the NFL. Miami’s new addition Jaylen Wright will likely make his first appearance for the teal and orange in week two as well. Drafted in the fourth round of this year’s draft. The Tennessee standout offers a 4.38 40 time for Mike McDaniel to gameplan with, so expect him to get the ball in space via screens and outside zone runs.
